Hospice & Palliative Care Month

Honoring our Staff, Volunteers, and Partners

November is recognized nationally as Hospice and Palliative Care Month. It takes special people to care for and support hospice patients. This is a month to honor all professionals who work in the field of palliative care, home health, and hospice, including nurses, aides, social workers, physicians, and so many more.

Most often, hospice care is provided in a hospital, nursing home, or assisted living facility. According to the Centers for Disease Control, only 33.4% of hospice patients are served in their homes.

Residential hospice is a unique way to offer hospice care; places like Celia’s House where there is a calm, knowledgeable focus on what matters most to the individual and their loved ones.

We are so fortunate to have this alternative here in the Rogue Valley and appreciate all of those individuals who help us sustain this service. Please join us in honoring our Celia’s House staff, volunteers, and partners for their compassion and commitment to providing dignified end-of-life care for our community.

The Impact of Your Giving on the Families We Serve

Dwight Wilson, Executive Director

As I enter my third year as Executive Director of Southern Oregon Friends of Hospice, I am filled with pride, love, and gratitude for everything we do at Celia’s House. We nurture and tend to the needs of residents at the end of their lives, their families, and extended loved ones, and we welcome anyone who requires residential hospice care.

We have a loving and compassionate group of caregivers guided by local hospice programs, over 100 committed volunteers who support Celia’s House, The HUB, and a vibrant spiritual care program for residents and their families. Devoted volunteer gardeners maintain and enrich our gardens, providing peaceful surroundings for those who visit or stay with us.

It is important to emphasize that your support makes all we do possible. As a nonprofit, we depend on donations to meet our operating expenses. Approximately one-quarter of our budget comes from donors. Without your open-hearted generosity, we would not be able to fulfill our mission. Because of you, our historic, welcoming home is well-cared for and maintained. In late fall, a major upgrade of our air and heating system will address individual room temperature needs and improve resident comfort. The financial support of generous donors and granting foundations makes this basic upgrade possible and greatly contributes to our level of personalized care.

Celia’s House is known throughout Oregon as a unique nonprofit model for end-of-life care. I hope you will continue to make possible the thoughtful, kind, and serene environment that we offer to individuals as they enter the last days and weeks of their lives.

Honoring The Life of Sue Carroll

As many of you may know, our former colleague Sue Carroll has died. Sue was the first employee of Southern Oregon Friends of Hospice and was instrumental in creating Celia’s House culture of mindful caregiving. Sue Carroll served in many roles, including Volunteer Coordinator, and helped train many cohorts of bedside volunteers. She helped raise funds to make Celia’s House a reality during her time as the Development Coordinator. She also developed a culture training course emphasizing courage, empathy, and presence for those we serve.

Sue’s mindful and humble approach is a powerful reminder to embrace empathy and kindness daily. All of us will miss Sue. The family is holding a private memorial, and there will be a memorial for Sue at Celia’s House on November 28th at 2 pm.

Quotes From Families

"Our family has had a tremendously difficult time with this loss, but everyone at Celia's House has been so kind and supportive. It does not make what we are feeling any less painful, but it is nice not to feel alone." -L
