A Beautiful Start to Fall

Honoring Barbara Roastingear Oliver

As we look ahead to this fall’s HUB Couture fashion event, we honor the woman whose spirit continues to inspire us: Barbara Roastingear Oliver. Barbara cherished her Native American heritage, her multitude of friends, art, laughter, and family. Though her passing at Celia’s House on December 2, 2023, was a great loss, her legacy of generosity, creativity, and friendship remains vibrant in our community.

Her creative spark helped form the South Mountain Crafters, a group that transformed beads, jewelry, and trinkets into treasures for The HUB—while weaving lasting bonds of friendship.

Barbara and her husband, Harry, generously contributed to the establishment of Celia’s House and continue to support its mission to this day. Their commitment has touched countless lives, ensuring compassionate end-of-life care for families across Southern Oregon.

Fall HUB Couture: Carrying Her Legacy Forward

Join us on Saturday, October 11, from 3–6 PM at the Stardust Lounge, Ashland Hills Hotel & Suites, for Fall HUB Couture—an event honoring Barbara’s memory and celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day. Expect fabulous fashion, a silent auction, tasty bites, community connection, and heartfelt tribute.

All proceeds benefit Celia’s House, carrying forward the mission Barbara held dear.

September is Pain Awareness Month

Pain Awareness Month is recognized every September to raise awareness about the widespread impact of pain, especially chronic pain, and to promote effective pain management. Pain awareness is crucial in both palliative and hospice care because it directly affects a patient’s quality of life and dignity during serious illness or at the end of life.

Understanding and recognizing different types of pain—whether physical, emotional, or spiritual—allows healthcare providers to deliver more compassionate and effective care. In palliative and hospice settings, where the focus shifts from curing illness to providing comfort, managing pain becomes a central goal.

Raising awareness about pain helps reduce stigma, encourages better communication between patients and caregivers, and promotes the use of individualized pain management strategies. Ultimately, pain awareness empowers patients and their families to make informed decisions, ensuring comfort, respect, and peace during some of life’s most challenging moments.

Vaccine Clinic at Celia's House October 8

We are scheduled to host a full-service vaccine clinic on October 8th from 10am to 2pm. The Western States have come together and clarified the vaccination requirements, especially for the COVID vaccine.

All vaccines will be as available as they were last year; for the COVID vaccine, the age and prescription requirement has been removed and will not be a requirement for the October 8 vaccine clinic. If this changes, we will let you know. In addition to the COVID vaccine, you will have access to the flu, shingles, RSV, and other vaccines, such as tetanus.

If you plan to attend our vaccine clinic, please reach out to Dwight Wilson at dwightwilson@sofriendsofhospice.org as soon as possible, and please fill out the vaccine consent form prior to arrival: Vaccine Consent Form

Please reach out to our team with any questions.
