Subject: Are You Reading This from the Fairway? Or Just Wishing You Were? ⛳🌮
Dear Members and Friends of SLC3,
Happy Cinco de Mayo!
Let’s be honest—North Americans seem to celebrate this day more than many in Mexico. Why? A few theories:
- We really love a good theme party.
- Margaritas don’t need a reason, just a date.
-
And let’s face it, with so many of us having Scottish and Irish roots, we’ve got a natural talent for turning battles into bar crawls.
But today isn’t just about tacos and tequila—it's also the perfect day for St. Louis’ largest-attended golf tournament! The SLC3 is out at Whitmoor Country Club, swinging clubs and making connections all day long.
If you’re reading this and not here with us, well... we know. You're either working (we salute you) or maybe just reading this in your PJs with coffee (we’re jealous). Either way, there’s always next year. Mark your calendars—364 days and counting.
To all of our players, sponsors, volunteers, and cheerleaders—thank you for making this our biggest “fun”-draiser of the year.
On behalf of the SLC3 Board and staff, we are grateful for your support, your participation, and your willingness to golf for a great cause (and maybe some bragging rights).
Cheers to a successful day on the green and a festive Cinco de Mayo! 🌮🍹 And of course the rest of the work week!
Wishing you luck on the green, productivity at work, and some dry May days,
Kelly Jackson, Executive Director

UMSL's Campus Transformation: A Vision for the Future - LJC Project Update
The University of Missouri–St. Louis is undergoing a significant transformation through its "Transform UMSL" initiative, guided by a comprehensive Campus Master Plan developed in collaboration with the Lamar Johnson Collaborative (LJC). Approved in November 2021, this plan aims to consolidate the academic core on the North Campus, enhance student experiences, and foster community engagement.
A centerpiece of this transformation is the Richter Family Welcome and Alumni Center, currently under construction. Designed through adaptive reuse, the center will serve as a welcoming hub for prospective students, families, and alumni, featuring open, light-filled spaces that encourage connection and engagement. Completion is anticipated in 2025.
The broader initiative includes $110 million in improvement projects, such as renovations to key facilities and the demolition of outdated structures on the South Campus. These efforts aim to repurpose 35 acres for the proposed North St. Louis County Business and Workforce District, aligning with UMSL's commitment to serving as an anchor institution for the region.
Funding for these projects includes $60 million from the American Rescue Plan Act, with additional support from private donations. The Transform UMSL initiative exemplifies strategic planning and community collaboration, positioning the university for a dynamic and sustainable future...

Building Resilience: Prioritizing Mental Health in Construction During Mental Health Awareness Month
Laying the Foundation for Mental Wellness
May marks Mental Health Awareness Month—a time to spotlight a critical yet often overlooked component of workplace safety: mental well-being. In the construction industry, where physical hazards are routinely addressed, mental health challenges remain prevalent and pressing. Recognizing and addressing these issues is essential for fostering a resilient and productive workforce.
Understanding the Mental Health Landscape in Construction
The construction sector faces significant mental health challenges. A 2020 study revealed that 83% of construction workers have experienced a mental health issue, underscoring the widespread nature of the problem. Furthermore, the industry ranks second highest in suicide rates among major industries, with over 5,000 construction workers dying by suicide each year, five times more than the annual number of job site fatalities.
Identifying Contributing Factors
Several factors contribute to the mental health crisis in construction. The industry's male-dominated culture often stigmatizes mental health discussions, viewing them as a sign of weakness. Additionally, long hours, job insecurity, physical strain, and exposure to hazardous conditions exacerbate stress and anxiety. These elements create an environment where mental health issues can thrive if unaddressed.
Barriers to Seeking Help
Despite the high prevalence of mental health issues, many construction workers do not seek professional help. Studies indicate that only 17% of industry workers would comfortably and openly discuss mental health issues with a supervisor. This reluctance is often due to stigma, fear of job loss, and a lack of awareness about available resources. Moreover, fewer than 5% of construction workers reported seeing a mental health professional, compared with 22% of all U.S. adults. We know this doesn't just mean construction workers, it's also professional workers in the industry. Stigma for men as well. The more barriers we mitigate for these groups the more help we can provide to those needing it the most.
Promoting a Culture of Support
Addressing mental health in construction requires a multifaceted approach. Employers can implement mental health training, provide access to counseling services, and foster an environment where open discussions are encouraged. Peer support programs and mental health awareness campaigns can also play a vital role in normalizing conversations around well-being. One crucial step is making resources easy to access. Organizations like the Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention (CIASP) and the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (call or text 988) offer confidential support...

Everyday Excellence, One Habit at a Time with Jeff Koziatek
Habit #19: Take Out the Trash
Mental trash can include…
- Yesterday’s hurts
- Past mistakes
- Old truths that are no longer true
- Beliefs that no longer help
Our brain has a finite amount of storage and when it’s full of trash, it’s hard to see anything new or good. To make room for new information and increase our ability to see the positive – we must take out the trash.
Remember:
Brains have limited storage so fill it wisely.
Performance Tips:
- Take only what you need to thrive.
- Let go of old baggage. It may (or may not) have served you in the past. If it’s not serving you today, leave it. You don’t have to keep carrying that junk.
- Empty your brain of clutter with lists, systems, calendars, or a new narrative.
- Use your limited storage capacity to hold positive affirmations and helpful beliefs.
