The hidden “C” and the critical “S” in Cyber-Security

Hello Greetings!

Last week, in my technology news section, the Twitter hack was the big news of the week. This attack was unprecedented as it apparently hit the internal administrator team and ended up affecting many high-profile users, including celebrities, politicians, and business people.

The list included Jeff Bezos, Kanye West & Kim Kardashian, Elon Musk, Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and Michael Bloomberg. The hack took over their accounts and sent a message saying that they would match a donation if followers would transfer Bitcoin into an account. The scammers ended up with more than $120,000 in untraceable Bitcoin payments.

The letters described in today’s article title, C & S, stand for Cyber-Security. Further down, their meaning will change.

Nowadays, Cyber-Security is one of the hottest topics in the telecommunications and network operations field. It requires a highly skilled and technically savvy full-time engineering team behind it. It is time-consuming and, if not done correctly, can generate costly mistakes like the twitter hack.

Security is one of the most important aspects of transformation in the digital world, especially in the Covid era, in which many employees are working remotely. Remote work exposes employees to vulnerabilities that they might not have had before while using their computers within their more secure corporate networks.

According to VMWare’s Global Threat Report, 91% of all global respondents said they’d seen an increase in cyber attacks as a result of employees working from home.

A recent survey by IDG found that in SD-WAN deployments, the two most challenging aspects of any implementation will be security overall and secure remote access. In contrast, the cost and agility of the project ranked #3 and #4, respectively.
Despite the preventative cost of cyber-security ranking as #3, the cost of recovering from a cyber attack of any kind could be huge.

Cybercrime Magazine predicts that cyber-crime damage costs will hit $6 trillion globally by next year.

If you are serious about reducing or mitigating the risk of a costly cyber-attack, you need to invest in the right technology and security solutions.

Furthermore, you ought to decide whether you want a full-time staff managing security or whether partnering with a service provider like Granite is more cost-effective in the long run.

We share the risk responsibility while reducing the overall cost.

In summary, the “ C” in Cyber-security has changed its meaning to signify “ Costs ”, while the “ S” in Security has pivoted to mean “ Savings .”

Sincerely,

Raul
