Brianna Brown, Executive Director of Texas Organizing Project (TOP), in observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day this year: “Today and every day, Texas Organizing Project lifts the humanity and celebrates the unshakeable resolve of our Indigenous communities, as they are irreplaceable to fully realizing the multiracial democracy our movement rooted in liberation aspires to build. “TOP's solidarity with our Indigenous brothers and sisters is as steadfast as ever, especially at a time when the Trump administration is shamelessly proposing the slashing of tribal government budgets and opening protected ancestral lands to resource extraction.

A Drive Home. A Walk from School. Children Caught in Harris County Gunfire

By Juli McShay

Forward Times

https://www.forwardtimes.com/

Three children were killed in separate shootings within one week. Two more survived gunfire in places their families had every reason to believe were safe. A mother drove her children home from their grandmother’s house. A student left school for the day. Another was heading to class on homecoming morning. A family waited in a parking lot to pick up a relative from work. There is nothing unusual about any of those moments. That is what makes the gunfire that interrupted them so hard to accept. Since Saturday, Sept. 19, three children have been killed in separate shootings across the Houston area: 5-year-old Zah’Layah Walton, 15-year-old Royce Witchet and 17-year-old LePaul Warren Jr.

WHAT'S GOING ON?

Big Mama Said: When God Says Move, Don't Just Shout—Move!

By Terry Allen

Texas Metro News

Big Mama taught me that prayer was never an excuse for standing still. You prayed, you listened, and when God showed you what needed to be done, you got up and moved. That lesson feels especially important right now. Genesis 12:1 says, “The Lord had said to Abram, ‘Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.’” God did not give Abram every detail. He gave him direction. Abram had to provide the movement.

My Truth: I helped one voter!

It is working, and I’m keeping hope alive. Thank you, Mrs. R.J. I really appreciate you restoring my faith in my work. Mrs. R.J. read my column last week, where I talked about the deadline to ensure you are eligible to vote and haven’t been erased, cancelled, or disenfranchised. She said she checked on line and found her name missing from the list of registered voters. Mrs. R.J., a senior citizen, thankfully had a daughter to help her, and she also had my number, which I had listed in last week’s newspaper.

Boston: The remarkable Bush-Obama friendship

By Talmage Boston

Dallas Morning News https://www.dallasnews.com/

Two former presidents are role models on how to overcome our political divisions. We recently passed the 25th anniversary of the world-changing events that occurred Sept. 11, 2001. From all the news stories commemorating the event, one in particular touched me more than the others. It ran on The Wall Street Journal’s front page on Sept. 12 and recounted the time when American forces found and killed Osama bin Laden in May 2011.Shortly after it happened, President Barack Obama.

How participating in the Black Economy would stop Police Brutality

By Emerald Pages Report https://emeraldbook.org/

Black Americans hold $2.1 trillion in annual buying power—larger than the GDP of Canada, Spain, or Saudi Arabia. Redirecting even one percent of that capital into Black-owned banks, businesses, and commercial districts would inject $21 billion directly into the community, starving predatory police budgets, funding independent safety infrastructure, and forcing systemic change without waiting for a single politician's permission. Police brutality is not a random American tragedy. It is a predictable outcome of specific economic conditions—conditions.

HBCU LOVE

HBCU Love on the Yard: Meet SpelHouse Couple Ashley & Jacobi

There is nothing on the planet quite like an HBCU homecoming. The exciting tailgates with red Solo cups and good eats in abundance, the can’t miss halftime show (better known as the 5th quarter), the feel-good brunches, the lit parties, the impromptu Swag Surfin’ that can happen anywhere the mood hits, the energetic Divine 9 step shows, the multigenerational beauty of alumni chopping it up with current students, the hugs that assure you although life is life-ing, everything is going to be alright. Oh…and the football game. The atmosphere is equally empowering and spiritual because in between all the joyous celebrations, we are reminded of the brilliance and tenacity of our brave, visionary ancestors who built HBCUs more than a century ago. The pride is palpable. In honor of this joyous and celebratory time for our culture, we’re honoring those couples who graduated from HBCUs, sometimes even on the same campus, and are now living their best lives together. Our Love on the Yard series is an intentional and necessary spotlight on Black love, Black excellence and Black joy!

That’s why getting a mammogram is important and you shouldn’t let the myths that are out there stop you. 1. The Mammograms Are Too Painful To Manage To get an accurate picture of your breast tissue, the machine will have to compress the breast. It typically sounds and looks more painful than it is. In fact, most people only report a temporary discomfort that they find to be bearable.

DAILY REMEMBRANCE

Somebody woke up to a void today and is trying to find their way.

Somebody won't be able to make things right because of things they didn't get a chance to say.

Somebody is wishing they could turn back time and gaze into a loved one's eyes. Somebody's heart has been broken by death, and all they can do is cry.

Somebody has fallen to their knees with the weight of sadness today.

Somebody is learning that the only way up from here is to stay on their knees and pray.
