The Ballot or the Bullet- Revisited!

By Vincent L. Hall

Texas Metro News

Although Malcolm X may have lacked the theological splendor of Martin Luther King, his plainspoken prophecies and preachments were often well received. On April 3, 1964, just four years and one day before the assassination of Dr. King, Malcolm traveled to the Corey United Methodist Church in Cleveland, Ohio. He delivered a speech that will never be forgotten. The Ballot or the Bullet” is prophetic prose, so much so that 137 leading scholars ranked it seventh among the top 100 speeches delivered in America during the 20th century

My Truth: 50 years of memories -

By Cheryl Smith

This week I am returning to Florida A&M University for Homecoming, and it’s hard to believe that 50 years ago, in the fall of 1976, I first walked on the campus as an eager college freshman. I had no clue what to expect or what my next step would be. I just knew I wanted to be a journalist, and I would get my degree from this great institution. Although I was a long way from East Orange, New Jersey, I knew a few people from not only New Jersey, but also from my parents’ hometown of Plant City, Florida. Granted, when I chose FAMU.

Essence https://www.essence.com/

Now the Democratic nominee, Nixon, 42, faces Republican Sen. Ashley Moody in the Nov. 3 general election, just 19 days away.

Black Storytelling: What “Sinners” Represents

By Sirius McDonell

The Metropolitan https://themetropolitan.metrostate.edu/

The tradition of storytelling isn’t a new practice. It has been around for hundreds, even thousands, of years. Through cave paintings, oral traditions and eventually scripture or ink-written pages, we have used storytelling to keep stories alive. While some may be metaphorical, using fictional creatures to keep certain ideas and morals alive, we also tell realistic stories. In African American culture, we have many stories that originated from our point of origin, Africa.

Life of the HBCU party: The ultimate cultural celebration and networking tool

Whether known for their law and medical programs, single-gender enrollment, engineering, research, or fine arts, each historically Black college and university (HBCU) comes with its own distinct character. Academics, scholarship and legacy are of the utmost importance, but alumni of historically Black colleges and universities also often share one common characteristic, or subculture: the parties.

DAILY REMEMBRANCE

Grief has colored my world. Such stark contrasts between the then and now.

How bland the white days when I can't see what is before me.

In a fog of non-distinctiveness.

No form or fashion to my existence on these days, and yet, I see light.

Something bright and warm beckoning me.

The dark days of color bring with them such darkness that I can't venture out.

I stay still, sometimes unable to even speak.

Wrapping myself within myself.

Going round and round and round.

Seeing burst of red through the spinning.

Marking my journey before and after.

Marking my journey round and round in what seems a senseless rotation.

Marking my journey from then to now.
