Why you don't want to miss WIN Week 2023!

By Andrew Martin (Edited from USA Today article)

In September 2020, the mayor of Spartanburg SC signed a resolution publicly acknowledging “the historical antecedents of systemic racism in our society and city” and apologizing for “the racial injustices and long-lasting inequities that have resulted from those policies.” One of these policies led to the systematic displacement and destabilization of black families during the 1970’s Urban Renewal projects. What was sold as a community development opportunity for current residents, became a dismantling of the many thriving black-owned businesses in Spartanburg. Lifelong Spartanburg resident and former South Carolina State Representative Harold Mitchel Jr. reminisced about the 80+ black-owned businesses lining the main street of that area prior to Urban Renewal. He coined it as “Spartanburg’s Black Wall Street”.

Spartanburg is a microcosm of our nation. Since the summer of 2020, systematic racism and social injustice are at the forefront of our national dialogue, as race continues to be the leading indicator of future success in this country.

Join WE in the World and the Wellville 5 April 24-27 in Spartanburg as we dive deep into the story of how we as a country got to this point, through the stories of people directly affected by inequities, highlight innovative solutions, and adopt a shared vision that creates sustainable change for everyone.

A Narrative Change Workshop for Community Organizers and Social Justice Activists will help equity architects, movement leaders, community organizers, and artist-activists working toward transformative justice with the skills and strategies to effectively communicate their message and create transformative change. The workshop explores the role that narratives play in shaping public opinion, reinforcing power structures, and perpetuating inequality and provides tools and techniques for developing a narrative that is inclusive, empowering, and effective in creating change.

The twelve-session workshop will be interactive, with a mix of group discussions, exercises, and case studies to help participants understand and apply the concepts and techniques presented. We will cover topics such as message development, framing, and persuasive communication and provides hands-on training in the creation and dissemination of narratives that challenge the status quo and support the goals of social justice activism. The objective of the workshop is to equip community organizers and social justice activists with the skills they need to effectively communicate their message, mobilize public support, and create lasting change in their communities and the world.
