Building a Restorative Economy

"Colonization and an economy focused on the accumulation of wealth, has led us to a world that fundamentally commoditizes people and planet leading to the Inequity and Climate Chaos that we face today."

~Laina Raveendran Greene

"The system is clearly not broke, it was rigged to benefit the few at the expense of people and the planet. Unless we recognize that we cannot use the same system that created the problems to solve them as well, we will never make the necessary systems change."

~ Rodney Foxworth

What does take to build a restorative economy?

by Laina Raveendran Greene

Restorative economics centers on healing and restoration of vulnerable communities who have been marginalized and oppressed by a polluting and extractive economy by investing in strategies that create shared prosperity and self-determination for a just transition to the next economy,” says Nwamaka Agbo, the CEO of the Kataly Foundation, and also known as the mother of “Restorative economics”. “From a tikanga point of view, tikanga is purpose and well-being driven, not profit-driven. That imposes on us a sacred obligation to deeply care for people and sacred obligation to care for the life-supporting capacity of the planet, in perpetuity”, another definition from a Maori innovator, Rangimarie Price, co-founder of the Connective in New Zealand.

At Angels of Impact, we see restorative investing as the tool to channel funding and support to amplify the impact of community-based entrepreneurs with lived experience to make the greatest impact. We see them as the “weavers” of the fabric of a resilient and just society given how they uphold the physical, spiritual, emotional and mental health of their communities. They also often play the role of preserving cultures and keeping families together which is key to building wellbeing and equity in the world.
