2025 CALENDAR

June 2, 2025

Do you ever wish you could know a lot of useless facts?Well, we have a few facts covered in this issue. Why? I hope it takes you away from whatever it is that is bugging you, just for a moment! And I am glad you will have something to talk about when you need to come up with something and you can't.

Good afternoon, community of members and friends! It's not Monday morning, but I needed a bit more time to share this newsletter with you. I was taking some time off for a move last week well I didn't work on anything to send you. I will have to get used to curating content alone once again until we replace our marketing coordinator. That is in the works.

Sadly, we are still struggling from the Tornado, but so happy to see so many St. Louisans, and in particular our AEC community, step up and show support through donations, providing resources, lending a hand, etc. More is needed; please remember to do what you can.

This summer we will be working on the second half of our programming for the year, and of course, working on next Spring's biggest events. Let us know if you would like to be involved on one of our amazing committees! Of course, we need the support as any non-profit would. The perks are worth it! Collaborating with peers towards common interests is one goal worth exploring. Expanding your network is another. And increasing your knowledge is certainly a given. Of course, building upon an equitable workplace is fulfilling. Come explore what awaits you here at SLC3!

Don't forget to come and hang out with us at the next coffee! And if you'd like to host your own, please let us know! We would warmly welcome that too!

Warmly,

Kelly

PLATINUM SPONSOR

I was reminded recently of our roots, which involved owners uniting behind a central cause. Although that core cause has changed, the need remains. If you are a consumer of construction services, what keeps you awake at night? What needs improvement? What could be done better? What consistently takes up too much of your time? Most importantly, do you want to know if others are struggling? And if not, why not? We are hosting a monthly Owner's Chat, which will be virtual or in person. Please RSVP to Rebecca for participating.

Our APP lets you access our membership directory, information, events, billing, and more.

CITY OF CRESTWOOD KICKS OFF CONSTRUCTION OF ITS NEW CRESTWOOD COMMUNITY CENTER

On Friday, May 23, 2025 the ground breaking took place for Crestwood's new community center. Funded by Proposition A, which passed in April 2024, the new 42,000 SF Community Center will offer expanded athletics, fitness, and recreational opportunities to Crestwood residents. Features of the new facility Bond Architects designed include a gym, weight rooms, studios for dance, yoga and fitness programs, and multipurpose rooms.

Construction is estimated to be completed in late 2026. The new Community Center will be built adjacent to the existing Community Center building. After construction is complete, the next phase includes partially demolishing the previous Community Center and converting it into a Pickleball / Family Games complex.

Project Team:

  • Architect: Bond Architects
  • MEP Engineering: IMEG
  • Structural Engineering: Larson Engineering
  • Civil Engineering: TWM
  • Landscape Architecture: DG2 Design
  • Owner’s Representative: NAVIGATE Building Solutions

The Blueprint to Success: Construction Project Management in 2025

Because Let’s Face It—"Winging It" Doesn’t Work with Cranes and Concrete

In the world of construction, the only constant is change—and maybe a shortage of skilled labor. As we dive headfirst into 2025, project management in construction is no longer just about clipboards and hard hats. It’s about marrying high-tech solutions with human know-how to keep jobsites humming, budgets intact, and schedules slightly less impossible.

If you're still managing projects with spreadsheets and "vibes," it's time to level up. Here’s a no-nonsense, slightly cheeky breakdown of what construction pros should be doing this year to stay ahead of the curve (and avoid those “what went wrong?” meetings).

🔧 Tech Integration: Embrace the Bots Before They Replace You

AI & Machine Learning – These aren't just buzzwords. AI can now forecast project delays, automate repetitive tasks (looking at you, timesheets), and analyze mountains of data faster than a caffeinated PM on deadline day.

Digital Twins & BIM – Think of this as having a clone of your building in the Matrix. Use it to test, tweak, and troubleshoot—before you lay a single brick.

Tech on the Jobsite – With sensors on equipment and wearable tech on workers, your site can talk to you. It’s not creepy—it’s progress.

Cloud-Based Platforms & PM Software – Shared docs, live updates, zero "Who has the latest file?" drama. If you're not in the cloud, you’re in the fog.

🌱 Sustainability: Because Building the Future Shouldn’t Wreck the Planet

Sustainable Materials & Methods – Green buildings aren’t just trendy—they’re becoming non-negotiable. Energy efficiency, low-impact designs, and water-saving systems are front and center.

Electric Equipment – Say goodbye to gas guzzlers and hello to battery-powered machinery. Your lungs (and your neighbors) will thank you.

👷 Skilled Workforce: Because Robots Still Can’t Pour Concrete (Well… Not Yet)

Training & Development – If we want quality work, we need to invest in our people. Train them. Mentor them. And no, a YouTube video doesn’t count.

Apprenticeship Programs – The skills gap isn’t going to close itself. Growing your workforce from the ground up (pun intended) is still the smartest move.

🔄 Project Delivery: Rethinking the Assembly Line

Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) – Early collaboration with all players—from architect to subcontractor to the poor soul stuck managing the punch list—leads to fewer surprises.

Modular & Prefab Construction – Pre-built components are hot, and not just because they're fast. They're cost-effective, reduce waste, and limit jobsite chaos.

🗣️ Communication: Because Miscommunication is More Expensive Than Steel

Centralized Platforms – Don’t make your team bounce between 11 apps and a group text thread called “Jobsite 🔥🔥.” Streamline it.

Clear Messaging – If your subcontractors are guessing, you’re losing time and money. Be direct. Be consistent. And maybe don’t use emojis in the schedule.

🚨 Risk Management: Expect the Unexpected (and Then Some)

Identify & Mitigate – A risk ignored is a crisis waiting to happen. Build risk reviews into every stage. Bonus points if you use software that actually helps you do this.

👥 Client-Centric Management: Make Them Feel Like the MVP

Set Expectations Early – Clear goals and no sugar-coating. If it’s going to take longer or cost more, say so—preferably before the foundation is poured.

Involve Them Early – Clients who feel heard are less likely to panic mid-project or hold back change orders until the eleventh hour.

📅 Planning, Scheduling, and Not Losing Your Mind

Strategic Planning – A strong project starts with a killer plan: scope, budget, timeline, people. No shortcuts.

Smart Scheduling – Advanced scheduling tools let you balance resources, track delays, and hopefully avoid those “Why is no one on site?” mornings.

🏁 After the Dust Settles: Post-Project Reality Check

Performance Reviews – Take the time to figure out what worked, what didn’t, and what should never be attempted again.

⚠️ A Few More Musts (Yes, You Still Have to Do These Too)

  • Compliance Management – Code violations are not cute. Know the rules.
  • Budget Oversight – Your accountant isn’t a magician. Track those costs.
  • Quality Control – Check everything. Twice. Then ask your QC lead to do it again.

In Closing: Manage Like a Boss (Not a Firefighter)

The construction manager of 2025 needs to be part tech nerd, part strategist, part people whisperer—and ideally, someone who doesn’t wait until Friday at 4 p.m. to fix a broken schedule.

Project management is no longer about surviving chaos. It’s about preventing it.

So plug in, train up, plan smart, and maybe—just maybe—you’ll finish that project on time and under budget. And if not? Well, at least your post-project review will be thorough.

Habit #23: Attitude

No one else gets to choose our attitude - we are responsible for our attitude and no one else.

A positive attitude...

     sees moments of gratitude

     looks for reasons to celebrate

     discovers hidden potential

     creates energy and momentum

     finds cause to hope

Will you choose a positive attitude for today or something else?

Remember:

We get to choose how we respond - persist or quit?

Performance Tips:

●     Reacting whips our attitude around with abandon. Responding gives us control of our attitude.

●     Expand the gap between stimulus and action so you can take time to choose an attitude for response.

●     We can’t always choose what happens to us, but we can always choose how we respond.

Weird but True: Brain Candy Break

Need a conversation starter or just a reason to pause and say “wait, what?” Here are a few unusual—but totally true—facts to spice up your day:

🔹 Wombat Poop Is Cube-Shaped.

No joke. It’s a territorial thing—and their intestines are the original 3D printers.

🔹 Bananas Are Berries. Strawberries Are Not.

Because botany decided to play by its own rules.

🔹 Sharks Are Older Than Trees.

They’ve been around longer than shade. That’s serious staying power.

🔹 Sloths Hold Their Breath Longer Than Dolphins.

Up to 40 minutes. Not fast, but freakishly efficient.

🔹 There’s an Immortal Jellyfish.

Turritopsis dohrnii hits life’s rewind button whenever it wants. Show off.

🔹 You Can’t Burp in Space.

No gravity = no gas separation. Astronauts gotta hold it in.

🔹 Norway Has a Town Where It’s Illegal to Die.

Longyearbyen won't bury you. It’s too cold to decompose—seriously.

Keep this in your back pocket for your next awkward networking moment—you’re welcome. 😉
