March 2, Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Lord, it is good to give thanks to you. Psalm 92

It is quite likely that Jesus had the first reading from the book of Sirach on his mind as he spoke. This passage is an amazing commentary on our public selves. The author calls us to live authentic lives, to let what is inside be consistent with what we say and do. What is especially fascinating is that both Jesus and Sirach suggest that we are not as good as we think we are at being fake people. People will know what is in our hearts by looking at our words and deeds.

Saint Paul, for his part, steeped in the Pharisaic tradition, also reflects on the way in which we live our lives, but he starts from a different perspective. He believes that since we have been robed with immortality, since we have already been given salvation in Christ, that reality needs to be lived out in our lives. Death has no more power. Sin should not even tempt us, for we have been saved.

Putting all of this together, it means that we should be living audacious lives with a radical honesty. The Prayer after Communion today reminds us that by the Eucharist, by Christ we have been set free to do good in this present age, and by living that freedom, we are prepared to live that freedom in all eternity in heaven. It is quite the challenge.

Including St. Wendelin in your Will is Easy!

Do you have life insurance you may no longer need? By naming our parish as a beneficiary, you will provide lasting financial support and may qualify for tax benefits as well. It will not cost anything to change the beneficiary on your policy- and will do much to help strengthen our parish for the future.

Contact your trusted advisor, visit https://catholiccommunity.planmylegacy.org/life-insurance, or call Moira Wopershall of the Catholic Community Foundation at 216-696-6525 x8070, for more information.

As Christian stewards, we share the responsibility of making our Church a true community of faith and a vibrant source of service to the larger community. That includes providing financial support for today's needs -- and building a firm financial foundation for St. Wendelin's tomorrow. Your IRA can be a tool to help you do this. If you are 70 ½ years old or older, you can make a Qualified Charitable Distribution today for up to $100,000 from your IRA directly to your parish. It will not count as taxable income, and it can satisfy your “required minimum distribution”. Looking to the future, consider naming our parish as a beneficiary IRA. Speak with your financial advisor. Thank you!

Recently, we received a donation via the Benevity Platform. If your workplace uses Benevity to support non-profits, we now have an official profile. Search St. Wendelin Church, Cleveland.

If you are 70 ½ or older, you may be able to make a gift of a Qualified Charitable Distribution from your IRA that will help us in our ministry and reduce your taxable income. Talk to your advisor and IRA administrator for more information and to be sure that your IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution gift is made directly from an IRA to a qualified charity such as St. Wendelin Parish. Questions? Contact Jean Ann Montagna (jmontagna@catholiccommunity.org) of the Catholic Community Foundation at 216-696-6525 x 8070 or visit www.catholiccommunity.org/ira.
