The Lord is kind and merciful. Psalm 103
Given the strong challenges that we have heard from Jesus these last few weeks, Lent will almost come as a relief. If what we thought were blessings (riches and happiness) could in fact lead us away, as we heard last week; today we learn that doing good things does not suffice in the eyes of God. If we are to follow Christ and so live the life of grace, we need to go above and beyond the adequate, above and beyond what we see in the world. Somehow our lives must show impossible love for others, greater charity and stronger faith. Because we have responded to God’s call and accepted Christ’s path as our own, because, as the second reading reminds us we long for the destiny of Jesus, we should not be surprised that we are called to live his life.
The example of David is also before us, calling us to account. We do not take advantage of those who hate us; we always act justly and always have a care for all God’s children. We let God’s will be done and so work for what is just within the rule of life that Jesus reveals in his own words and deeds.
So, with Lent on our doorstep, the challenge of today’s readings are good to hear; they can help us wake from our drowsiness and take up the work of those who claim Christ as their savior. In what ways have we been merely adequate in our lives?

Including St. Wendelin in your Will is Easy!
Do you have life insurance you may no longer need? By naming our parish as a beneficiary, you will provide lasting financial support and may qualify for tax benefits as well. It will not cost anything to change the beneficiary on your policy- and will do much to help strengthen our parish for the future.

As Christian stewards, we share the responsibility of making our Church a true community of faith and a vibrant source of service to the larger community. That includes providing financial support for today's needs -- and building a firm financial foundation for St. Wendelin's tomorrow. Your IRA can be a tool to help you do this. If you are 70 ½ years old or older, you can make a Qualified Charitable Distribution today for up to $100,000 from your IRA directly to your parish. It will not count as taxable income, and it can satisfy your “required minimum distribution”. Looking to the future, consider naming our parish as a beneficiary IRA. Speak with your financial advisor. Thank you!
If you are 70 ½ or older, you may be able to make a gift of a Qualified Charitable Distribution from your IRA that will help us in our ministry and reduce your taxable income. Talk to your advisor and IRA administrator for more information and to be sure that your IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution gift is made directly from an IRA to a qualified charity such as St. Wendelin Parish. Questions? Contact Jean Ann Montagna (jmontagna@catholiccommunity.org) of the Catholic Community Foundation at 216-696-6525 x 8070 or visit www.catholiccommunity.org/ira.
