Province earmarks funds for local government, transit restart
  
Earlier today Finance Minister Carole James introduced supplementary estimates in the legislature for up to $1 billion to fund the Province's portion of municipal and transit services assistance, depending on the outcome of further federal cost-sharing discussions in this priority area. "This is good news for B.C. local governments. UBCM has been making the case that transit systems in particular need to be prioritized as federal restart funding is allocated. Today's announcement demonstrates the province is committed to maximizing the value of this program for local governments. We will continue to engage with the province as the final approach takes shape and look forward to seeing the final details."   

Update on settlement of longstanding RCMP issues
  
The Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General, on March 23, 2020, reached an agreement with the federal government to resolve three long-standing disputed items under the Police Service Agreements. The Settlement Agreement between BC and Canada is retroactive to April 1, 2019, and will impact the cost of policing for local governments that utilize RCMP services. UBCM has sought additional information subsequent to the announcement to make that available to our members.  Read more

UBCM releases draft climate action recommendations
  
UBCM will be hosting a series of webinars on the twenty-one (21) draft recommendations of the UBCM Special Climate Action Committee. The webinars will seek feedback on a series of recommendations on buildings, transportation, waste management, resilience, governance, and social mobilization.    Read more

Emergency Program Act review update
  
UBCM continues to work with Emergency Management BC (EMBC) through the UBCM-EMBC Flood and Wildfire Advisory Committee to address the modernization of provincial emergency management legislation. Engagement is expected to continue until the tabling of new legislation, which has been delayed due to COVID-19 from fall 2020 to spring 2021.    Read more  

Streamlined process for temporary layoff variance applications
  
A new initiative by the provincial government is helping to keep employers and workers connected as British Columbia continues on the path towards economic recovery.   A streamlined variance application process is now available for employers and workers to jointly apply to the Employment Standards Branch to extend a temporary layoff period.  Read more   

FireSmart funding renewed, expanded
  
Grants to assist BC local governments and First Nations to undertake wildfire prevention activities have been renewed under the 2021 Community Resiliency Investment (CRI) program announced last week by the Province.

Cariboo RD - NsTQ, Tsilhqot'in & Southern Carrier partnership
  
The Northern Secwepemc Te Qelmucw (NsTQ), Tsilhqot'in, and Southern Carrier / Dakehl First Nations are working with the Cariboo Regional District to undertake a regional labour market study. Theirs is one of the stories featured in Pathways to Collaboration, a project to showcase the growing number of successful economic development collaborations and partnerships between First Nations and local governments in BC. 

Asset Management Planning intake
  
The delayed intake deadline for this year's Asset Management Planning program is approaching on September 11, 2020. Matching grants of up to $15,000.00 are being offered.  Read more

Right to Home
  
COVID-19 has exposed the vulnerabilities in Canada's housing and shelter systems. As communities rethink housing, the current crisis may present an opportunity for transformative change. Organized by the Canadian Urban Institute and The Shift,  Right to Home  offers a week of virtual film screenings and live panel discussions from coast to coast about what's working, what's not, and what's next, as communities consider the right to home. The event will run from July 27-31.
