I Am an Artists:

Compassionate Resilience

In a world that is constantly changing, it's easy to feel overwhelmed or disconnected from ourselves. Compassionate Resilience invites us to reflect on how we meet challenges—whether we react out of habit or respond with awareness and intention. This self-assessment helps us understand where we are on the path from feeling Silenced, where it is hard to connect with what matters, to Thriving, where our choices align with our highest values. In stressful or uncertain times, strengthening this inner awareness helps us stay grounded, clear, and committed to our wellbeing.

EVENT SPOTLIGHT

May 29, 2025

3:00p - 4:00p CST

Even though most people will have more than one job, we are somehow sold the dream of a linear career progression--finish school, get a job and then retire. Though this has not been the case for many over the last three generations, it is still the picture we have in our minds. Further, events beyond our control might necessitate changing course and pivoting into another career path. It can be done, though! This session will cover often overlooked valuable resources that can be used for job transition and improving your current professional status. Regardless of your current career status, or your level of educational achievement, there's bound to be some bit of information shared that will you help you navigate the professional world. So join us! Let’s rewrite the rules of career success—together.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

ADRIENNE WESTWOOD

Adrienne Westwood Projects/VIA Collaborative Arts Corporation

Brooklyn, NY

Tell us about yourself.

I am a Brooklyn-based choreographer, director and interdisciplinary artist whose multi-layered work incorporates objects into embodied explorations of memory, bringing traces of other times and places into the present moment. My work weaves together the private and communal, past and present, singular and plural to invite multi-sensory experiences of contemplation and imagination, building imaginative worlds that transport one form the “here and now” to another time or place, be it the past, future, or simply another sort of terrain or environment. These works for cottages, flip books, nooks, crannies, screens, gardens, voicemails, a truck, as well as traditional theaters, have been presented widely in NYC, nationally and internationally.

What makes you Thrive?

I thrive in interdisciplinary, deeply collaborative processes and I co-founded VIA Collaborative Arts Corporation in 2005 to support this sort of work. My current project, [ ]—announced by framing your head with curved arms or saying “the empty space between brackets”—blends dance, music, and technology. At its core is an interactive musical sculpture, strung with golden “memories”: simple, evocative objects that serve as portals into stories. The piece is a response to the urgent need to recognize and celebrate femme labor—embodied, often overlooked, and rarely named. I’m creating it in radical collaboration with composer Angélica Negrón and a team of 10 brilliant performers, designers, and creatives. We just previewed it at ODC Theater in San Francisco and are gearing up for a premiere and national tour next year.

Art Restart: Filmmaker Cyrus Moussavi Finds Stories Where the Music Lives

What does it mean to preserve music—not just the sound, but the lives behind it? On the Art Restart podcast, filmmaker and music archivist Cyrus Moussavi shares how growing up between Iran and Iowa shaped his deep, eclectic love for sound and storytelling. From reissuing hidden musical gems at Mississippi Records to co-directing genre-defying films, Cyrus talks about ethical archiving, creative collaboration, and why listening is a radical act of care.
