It’s hard to believe we are already in February. It seems like we were just celebrating Christmas last week, not over a month ago! Now that we are past Christmas, many handbell choirs are preparing for spring concerts, festivals, spring rings, and lent/Easter services. I have been encouraged and excited to see plans for a number of HMA Area 12 Endorsed Events this spring. These include the Concordia University Festival on March 18 in Irvine, CA; the Bay Area Spring Ring on April 22 in Cupertino, CA; the Sierra Spring Ring on May 13 in Reno, NV; and the SoCal Spring Ring on May 26-27 in Oceanside, CA. In Boulder City, Nevada, we just completed the annual Twelfth Night Festival conducted by Cathy Moklebust. Seeing and hearing handbells back in the swing of things is exciting! I hope you can make it to one of these exciting events this spring. Information for all of these events is on the Area 12 website (https://area12.handbellmusicians.org). I am excited that I was able to attend Twelfth Night and that I will be able to attend the Sierra Spring Ring and the SoCal Spring Ring.
Happy Ringing!

Did you know that a number of documents about how the Area operates are available on the website? Documents like the annual budget and governing documents, including the latest Rules of Procedure (ROP) approved at the January board meeting. (If you've ever considered being a part of the board, you can get an idea of the work involved in the various positions by reading through the ROP.)
To find the Rules of Procedure, on the top menu select "About Us" and then go to "Administrative Resources". On that same page is a link to the Guild paperwork required for sponsored or endorsed events.

My fingers are crossed that a church in Sparks will be starting up their bell choir again, but they first need to hire a director. I was asked for my input as to what to look for in a handbell director and after I submitted my thoughts to them, the list became my personal Bell Director New Year's Resolution. Then it occurred to me that others might appreciate having a list like this either for hiring a bell director or for themselves, so here it is:
|
|
Goals for the Conductor/Artistic Director
Leadership
- demonstrate critical thinking and wisdom
- build a common vision to create community
- be accessible and approachable
- be able to command respect, be confident
- develop and maintain norms
Professionalism
- maintain objectivity under stressful situations
- be able to assess a situation and know how to manage it
Adaptability
- respond to problems and changes as a challenge rather than an obstacle, be positive
- roll with the punches and maintain focus
Integrity
- communicate effectively
- be authentic, transparent, and honest
- be dependable and follow through
Other Personal Skills
- value collaboration
- be likeable, connect with others
- be organized and timely
- look forward, plan ahead
- advocate for the ensemble
- value individuals, don’t discriminate
Musicianship and Teaching Skills
- be able to demonstrate and teach proper technique including articulations and multiple bell skills
- be able to conduct effectively/communicate through your conducting gestures
- knowledge of literature
- knowledge and application of different music genres
- knowledge of musical terms and basic theory
- do your score study, including looking over each assignment and finding possible solutions to problem areas
- know your ringers and assign them appropriate parts. Consider where/when they need to grow and where/when they need to be in their comfort zone
- have the ability to assess individual’s needs/learning styles and have the tools to help them be successful

I hope you've all remained safe from the effects of the weather we've been having recently. I know we really need the water, but wow, this weather has been something else!
You should be receiving postcards for the 2023 SoCal Spring Ring very soon. Please feel free to share it with other handbell musicians who may not yet know about the event. We'd love to have a full house!
However, I want you all to know: we will NOT cancel this event, even if we don't have as many attendees as we've had in past years. So if you or your group are planning to attend, please send me an email [please link to SoCal.Area12@handbellmusicians.org] to let me know -- even if you can't yet send in your registration just yet. And remember, you can attend as an individual, so even if your group doesn't plan to come, you can still spend the day ringing with us!
|
|
One more thing: as you know, I am now serving as Chair Elect for Area 12. That means we need someone else to be the SoCal Regional Coordinator. If you or someone you know would be a good fit for the position, please let me know. I'm not moving away, and I do plan to continue coordinating & running the Spring Ring, so I will be here to help the new RC get settled in.
Have a great February!
My best,
-Michèle

The Bay Area Spring Ring is FOR YOU—whether you are an individual ringer, a small ensemble, a two octave choir or more! Acclaimed Sonos music director James Meredith will be taking ringers through what promises to be an incredibly musical experience. You won't want to miss being under his leadership for the day. Jim brings to the podium his long association with handbells as well as his collaborative and performance experience as a pianist, vocal and instrumental accompanist and conductor in America, Europe and Asia with artists such as Frederica von Stade, Elizabeth Schwartzkopf, and Kronos. For more on Mr. Meredith, check out the Spring Ring page at handbellventures.org/springring
The 2023 Spring Ring repertoire (see the side bar) includes music selections that work well for both church and community groups, in worship or in concert, with a focus on pieces that can be played by two octave groups.
The Intense Ring is open to the "want to be challenged" ringer. You will work up James Meredith's Echoes of Ancient Japan (Level 5 | Meredith Press) in just one day, with rehearsal on Saturday morning, and a run-thorough right before the concert; it's intense! But if you love to ring, it's also very fun!
Registration is opening up in the next week.

Marquise

Teachers: Would you like the use of a three octave set of handbells or handchimes to add interest and a new dimension to your music class?
Area 12 encourages schools and other educational institutions, both public and private, to develop educational programs using handbells and handchimes.
To support the development of such programs, Area 12 has six 3-octave sets of handbells and three 3-octave sets of handchimes for loan.
To learn more about the responsibilities and procedures for participating in this program, click here.
