NEWS

$150,000 matching gift for Solar Suitcases

This year, Alongside Hope is shining a light—literally—on safer births in Mozambique and Madagascar. We're raising funds for 49 Solar Suitcases: compact, powerful kits that bring light and essential tools to rural maternal clinics that often have no electricity. Thanks to a generous $150,000 matching gift, every dollar you give goes twice as far—bringing hope, safety, and light to where it’s needed most.

Cuba prepares for hurricane season

Cuba is facing relentless storms, blackouts, and growing shortages—but local partners are responding with strength and care. During recent partner visit by Alongside Hope staff, Jeannette Lara, we saw your support in action: food, medicine, and clean water reaching families in need. We're also helping install solar panels and generators to keep water flowing when the power fails.

Boda-boda driver drives change in Uganda

Ssali Majjidu, a boda-boda rider in Wakiso, Uganda, has spent years supporting his community by mediating conflicts and addressing gender-based violence after training with Action for Rural Women’s Empowerment. He now holds honest conversations with men about respect, equality, and healthy relationships, reaching about 45 people monthly. Despite challenges, Majjidu believes real change begins when men take responsibility and start talking.

EVENTS

Join the Wild Ride - be a light of change!

From now until October 4, Canadians from all walks of life are taking part in Alongside Hope’s fourth annual Wild Ride — a season of joyful action to support safe births in Mozambique and Madagascar.

So far, we’ve raised over $10,000, with 13 teams and 23 amazing participants already walking, baking, crocheting, and paddling toward brighter beginnings for mothers and babies.

Betty, in the Yukon, is quietly crocheting baby blankets, stitch by stitch, sending warmth and care across the globe. Nora, in Halifax, is baking sourdough bread every weekend and donating her sales. And out west, Team Pedal Power is logging long miles on their bikes in honour of the long journeys pregnant women often make to reach care.

Want to be part of it? Whether you move your body, use your hands, lift your voice, or share your talents—there’s a place for you in the Wild Ride. Need a little help getting started? Our Fundraising Toolkit has everything you need to spark ideas and invite your community to join in. Join us. Be a light. Help bring safe, solar-powered births to the places that need it most.

Need some Wild Ride one-on-one time?

Check in with our Volunteer Coordinator, Kim Umbach, on Thursday, August 28th from 1:00-2:30p.m. ET. No need to register ahead of time, just go to the Zoom link below and pop in to ask Kim your questions! Additional “office hours” will be announced.

Join the Becoming Kin Book Study!

This fall, join Alongside Hope for a six-part online book study as part of our 2025 learning journey, Living Into Right Relationships. We’ll be reading Becoming Kin by Patty Krawec, an Indigenous writer who invites us to reimagine kinship, land, and solidarity through the lens of history, memory, and Indigenous ways of knowing. The book is available at libraries, bookstores, and on Audible.ca.

Unite for Justice, Grow the Movement

Jubilee 2025 is a gathering of faith, justice, and global solidarity taking place on September 5 from 7 to 9 p.m. ET at Trinity-St. Paul’s United Church in Toronto, with the option to join online. The evening will feature voices from Jubilee 2000 and the G7 People’s Forum, reflections on ecological debt, and conversations in preparation for COP30. Through stories of resistance and hope, we’ll explore how communities are confronting injustice and building a more just world. All are welcome. Register to attend in person or stream online.

Praying with Alongside Hope will be taking a summer break and will return in September.

Thank you for journeying with us in prayer. We look forward to gathering again in the fall to continue lifting up our partners, our work, and the hope we share.
