The Opening Luncheon at 12:00 pm provided the perfect opportunity to catch up with colleagues or schedule time to get to know someone new. The luncheon featured a special panel on migration.
How Migration is Changing the World: Over lunch,
Jason DeParle of the
New York Times, and a panel of researchers including Moderator
Carolyn Heinrich (Vanderbilt University),
Hamutal Bernstein (Urban Institute) and
Neeraj Kaushal (Columbia University), talked immigration policy from multiple angles.
DeParle gave a keynote speech based on his new book,
A Good Provider is One Who Leaves, which chronicles his 32 years spent following a single family as migration lifted them from a shantytown in Manila to a middle-class American life. He explained how his initial focus on slums slowly morphed into one on immigration, and the parallels of the struggles of a Filipino mother in a make-shift home, and those of her immigrant daughter and her own daughters in a suburb of Texas. The lunch then continued with research presentations on immigration around the world and its actual impact on society.
