The Message from Interim Pastor, Rev. Dr. David Felton
This is busy time in the life of our church. Our search committee is continuing their important work. They are also reporting to the congregation regularly. The properties committee is also working diligently prioritizing the physical needs of our buildings. On June 29th our summer camp begin under the capable leadership of Rosa Sousa.
On June 5th at 4:00 pm we will have a graveside service for Wayne Prescott at Mill Village cemetery. He is survived by his wife Julie and his m other Mabel. Please keep them inn your prayers.
The first Sunday in June is communion Sunday. Everyone at the table is welcome--men, women and children. My sermon title is "Feeding the 20,000." Since the scriptures only mention 5,000 men, I've always believed Jesus also included the women and children.
The second Sunday will be "Do not Worry." I know it's relevant to me but possibly relevant to you also.
The third Sunday will be celebrating our diversity. The service will be lead by more than just me and In hope this stimulates questions and conversations among the whole congregation.
The fourth Sunday will be "What is Most Important."
It is a joy to be a part of you.
David

Summertime Security Notice
Beginning the week of June 14th we'll be locking the parish house activity building overnight and whenever it is not in use during the week. This will provide added security for our community camp personnel and the young children attending the camp during its run from June 29th through mid-August. Leaders approved this step in May. Once the camp sessions are completed they will evaluate continuing this security measure throughout the rest of the year. All locks and push bar exits have been serviced.
During camp the church tries to emulate the security approach taken in our local schools by controlling access to the building during camp hours, limiting visitors to the site and restricting deliveries as much as possible. Remember to use only the main parsonage entrance if you need to see Pastor David. Postpone campus visits until after-hours or the weekend whenever you can.
You'll need a key if you have regular activities at the parish house. Those who do not have keys may request one if needed from Kathy Wright.

Understanding what we have been given:
Embarking on what we need to do next
Spoiler Alert--There's an intentionally
doubled meaning in the title above.
As a church community we at Meriden Congregational Church are the stewards of the gifts that we have received from previous generations: faith-filled inquiry, prayer and the witnessing to a holy Justice for all in our world. Our day-in-an- day-out focus as a church of believers, seekers and witnesses centers us on deep questions of faith, strong values, visionary ideals and service to others. What comes next is always a part of our tradition of vital religious faith. That's a heady order. We understand the past, assess the present moment and then step boldly forward into the next communal challenge.
Yet, there's another way to read the title above that's more down to earth and pragmatic. Throughout the past 246 years our MCC foremothers and our MCC forefathers have provided a location and structures on the Meriden Green to house our worship, educate our members from young to old, celebrate our good times and mourn our losses. Earlier wooden church buildings were destroyed by fire and finally replaced by a stone edifice. An historic family residence was donated to serve as a parsonage. An activity building was constructed sixty years ago for community events. We've inherited much from the past. It's probably time we begin to think about what comes next for our church's physical structures.
In the past year church leaders have received detailed architectural, mechanical and structural engineering reports about the condition of church sanctuary, our venerable 1700's parsonage and the 1960's parish house where we hold our activities. Our buildings exhibit some concerning issues and there's a good bit of deferred maintenance that is currently outstanding.
So, this spring we've begun to tease out the practical consequences of those 246 years of wear and tear on our facilities. Frankly, we've got some serious work to do over the next three to ten years. Greg Castell, Selden Lord and Evan Oxenham have joined me in helping prioritize the needs identified by the several professional assessments. Each of them has held elected responsibility in the church. Each brings some pertinent real-world experience in project management, facilities maintenance and construction to this ad-hoc group. We will share these steps with elected Leadership as well as with all of you in the congregation.
At our first working session we started to develop some preliminary guidelines for our work, and we'll be polishing them over the next month or two--
A) Protect and maintain the immediate safety of our Members, Visitors and Families.
B) Restore and maintain the structural and physical integrity of our buildings and spaces.
C) Analyze and approach complex, multi-faceted problems with clear and direct solutions.
D) Steward the environment and our wider community as we make decisions.
E) Use our church's limited financial and personnel resources carefully.
F) Always remember why we choose to come together as a church.
As we embark on our search for a new "settled pastor," we now have an opportunity to "re-examine" and to "re-new" our church. That means looking afresh both at the vibrant and deep spiritual inheritance and connections we share as well as making a critical assessment the places and spaces where we hope to flourish for the years to come.

Search Committee Update
We are honored and excited to be prayerfully discerning who we are as a church and who God is calling us to be. Thanks to all of you for your feedback so far, both in the official listening sessions and to us individually.
We are in the process of writing a questionnaire that will be sent to the entire membership that invites your individual feedback. You will have the option to make your answers anonymous. We are also busy reviewing other churches’ profiles in order to get a lay of the land.
Here are the three questions that we will seek to answer in the profile:
1. Who are we?
2. Who are our neighbors?
3. Who is God calling us to be?
We invite all of you to prayerfully reflect on these questions!
Respectfully submitted,

What Motivates Me to be a Member of the Meriden Congregational Church, United Church of Christ
Meriden Congregational Church supports my faith, my confidence, my sense of agency,
the sense of “What we do in this world matters and has an effect on the world.” It is
community and connection that is intertwined with Love. The shared values of our
congregation includes the broader community of people who participate in charitable
giving as well as community services. I feel embraced by this love. I feel a sense of
belonging. There are examples of peace, justice, and outreach that may be visible
demonstrations as well as caregivers and hospitality and other forms of giving that are
behind the scenes.
The first time I came to a church service was by the invitation of Emily Quimby. It was
Children’s Sunday. Sunday School children presented their teachers with gifts of plants.
Communion was also served. Rev. Greg Marshall was giving the sermon and explained
the trip to the USSR with Bridges for Peace. Then George Butler played on the organ
Ode to Joy and we sang. I was brought to tears. I knew then that this was the church
for me. My heart was filled with joy.
I love music. I joined the choir and I got to know the choir members better. They
became my friends. After my son, Rigel was born I joined church committees and I got
to know more people. And when my stepmom died and other family and friends died, I
had plenty of care and support from the congregation. The Meriden Congregational
Church is Open and Affirming. This statement of solidarity shows the strength of the
love of this church.

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for (audience)? Why should they care (benefit)? What do I want them to do (call-to-action)?
Create a great offer by adding words like "free," "personalized," "complimentary," or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take action, so consider inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining!"

Book Study Group Is Halfway through the Book
Our next book: Beyond the Politics of Contempt - Practical Steps to build positive relationships in divided times by Dough Techner, Beth Malow and Becky Robinson. "Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I will meet you there." Rumi
The authors suggest questions to consider as we work our way through this book:
- Do I sometimes view those with different political views as misguided, duped, or maybe even as enemies?
- Can I consider that those with different viewpoints might help me to view contentious issues through a different lens, offering perspectives from which I might learn and possibly even grow?
- What role do silo(also known as tribes, in-groups, and echo chambers) play in my interactions, or lack of interactions, with fellow citizens with different perspectives?
- What actions can I take so that political issues do not affect my health or undermine relationships with family, friends, coworkers, and neighbors?
- How can I be an effective political activist who fights for my beliefs while also reaching out to those on the other side?
- What can I do to help rebuild a national culture of kindness, dignity, and respect?
- What might the answers to these questions help me to understand about myself?
This is a book that offers a positive and hopeful approach to the future. It is a pretty easy and fast read and will undoubtedly make for great conversations and certainly has the potential to impact our lives in a good way. If this book sounds like something you are interested in reading and engaging in conversation with friends and be in community, then please join us.

Germany's Hydrogen Trains: Germany permanently retired diesel engines across 4,000 kilometers of rural track and replaced them with hydrogen fuel cell trains. Because the hydrogen is generated using surplus wind power from the national grid, this initiative effectively eliminates roughly 240 million liters of diesel consumption and 630,000 tonnes of emissions annually.

Into God's Hands
Our hearts ache with the loss of dearly beloved friends and relatives of our faith community.
We pray for Diane and Mark Walker and their family because of the death of George Walker, Mark’s father, on May 13th. Our prayers go to Shirley Walker, Mark’s mother and their family.
We also pray for Nancy Brown-McKinney and her children, Kate and Matthew as well as their family and loved ones following the death of Herb Mckinney on May 7th.
We also pray for Laura Cousineau's sister Angy and her family upon the death her husband Eric Hilgendorf, who died in Abu Dhabi on May 26th following a long illness.
As each of these dearly departed ones has returned to the source of Love from which all life comes, may their families and loved ones be comforted with Love’s healing embrace in the midst of this time of mourning.
