FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Oconomowoc, Wisc. ----- July 27, 2018  ----- After reviewing applications from more than 50 qualified and deserving applicants, the USHJA Foundation is pleased to announce Emily Sheveland, of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, is the 2018 $25,000 USHJA Foundation Hamel Scholarship for Further Education recipient.

This prestigious award will help Sheveland pursue her dream to become a doctor who serves medically underserved rural areas. Her own struggles with dyslexia and a Rheumatoid Arthritis diagnosis, combined with the lessons learned through riding, Sheveland knows not only the power of hard work but the importance of a positive attitude.

"I am very grateful to have been chosen to receive the USHJA Hamel scholarship," said 21-year-old Sheveland, who maintained a 4.0 GPA at the University of Florida. "The funds I will receive will be very helpful as I pursue a Rural Medicine Degree at the University of Wisconsin. With my degree, I will strive to help the medically underserved rural areas throughout the United States. This scholarship is just one of many ways that the USHJA has helped me and many others achieve our dreams."

Riding has always been a passion of Sheveland's, and she worked her way up in the sport, despite limited finances, participating in the USHJA Emerging Athletes Program, U.S. Pony Finals, FEI North American Youth Championships, Prix des States and more. She plans to use the skills she has gained from her time at the barn and in her career.

"Through the years, riding has taught me the importance of setting goals and that perseverance truly pays off. The dedication and patience I learned from working with horses are valuable traits to have in the medical field. Horses have been one of the greatest influences in my life, and I hope to continue riding through school and my life."

The $25,000 USHJA Foundation Hamel Scholarship for Further Education is made possible through the generous support of the Hamel family and aims to provide one USHJA member each year with a tremendous opportunity to advance their education in college, trade or professional school.

"We are pleased that once again the USHJA Foundation has found an incredibly worthy recipient for the Hamel Scholarship for Further Education," the Hamels said. "Emily has clearly demonstrated a great deal of determination to overcome tremendous obstacles in her life.  She is a great role model for hard work and dedication. We look forward to watching her on this journey and hope the scholarship program continues to inspire other students, riders and the entire equestrian community."
