Dear Friends in Christ,
The above picture was taken in 2005 when Sacred Heart Parish in Bellingham celebrated its centennial. I was pastor and the priest on the right, the former pastor, was just named our new auxiliary bishop on Tuesday: Bishop-elect Frank Schuster! We lived together in the Sacred Heart rectory for three years, as Bishop Schuster became pastor of Assumption Parish in Bellingham when I arrived at Sacred Heart. He is an extrovert off the charts, and I am not! But he helped me liven up a bit and I calmed him down a bit during that time. It was a fun time and a wonderful way to experience my first years as a pastor. We helped each other through much challenge and experienced a lot of joy as well along the way. I am very happy that the Holy Father tapped him to be our new auxiliary bishop! He is an accomplished priest and has a heart for service. That will serve him well in the years ahead. Please join me in praying for Bishop-elect Schuster as he prepares to be ordained a bishop at Saint James Cathedral on May 3, 2022.
Blessings,
Fr. David Mulholland
Pastor

Prayer, Fasting & Almsgiving
The Health Ministry's annual Meatless Fridays in Lent campaign starts on the first Friday in Lent and ends on Good Friday.
This campaign is a beautiful way to improve your physical and spiritual health. A tasty meatless recipe will be published each week along with the Lenten Grace prayer to say before each meatless meal. Consider donating the money you'll save by cooking at home and eating in to CRS Rice Bowl.
LENTEN GRACE PRAYER
We bless you, Lord, and we praise you, for You have given us this meal to share, provided by the earth and prepared by human hands. Help us to remember those who cannot eat because of poverty or sickness. Let the brief hunger we feel this Lent make us hunger even more for justice. May this meal strengthen us to do Your will. Blessed be God forever.
Everyone who goes meatless on all Fridays in Lent will be included in a drawing for a chance to win a $100 Metropolitan Market Gift Card.
The Health Ministry also would like to suggest that each parishioner walk at least 1/3 mile each Friday or as often as possible during Lent to honor the distance Jesus walked on his journey to Calvary. Say the prayer below and reflect on it during the walks.
PRAYER DURING LENT
Heavenly Father,
As I enter another week of my Lenten Journey, guide me to the path that leads to you. Fill my heart with gratitude, patience, strength, and peace as I strive to become the best version of myself, honestly admitting my shortcomings
and sins.
As I renew my resolve each day to become a better person, let me hear your voice in the deepest reaches of my heart. Give me rest in you.
Help me to accept others, showing them your great love instead of casting judgment.
Stay with me through the busy days this week and remind me that when I need comfort, solitude, wisdom, or guidance, I can always turn to you.
Help me develop discipline and generosity through fasting and almsgiving, and come closer to your through prayer this Lent.
In your name, I pray. Amen

Stephen Ministry
Are you going through a tough time – physically, emotionally, or spiritually?
Are you struggling with a personal crisis or challenge? Feeling isolated, lonely, or COVID weary?
Suffering is unavoidable, even when it is not your own, but carried in your heart for another. You may project an outward smile but wish you could lighten the load with someone who will listen, be trusted to maintain confidentiality, and walk with you as long as you need the support.
Loneliness is perhaps the most insidious and prevalent crisis in our time. You do not need to be alone in the struggle.
Consider letting a Stephen Minister help. We are available in person or virtually. A Stephen Minister is a member of our parish trained to listen, care, encourage, pray and walk alongside you during difficult times. It’s confidential and free!
Call Stephen Ministry at 253-383-2783 ext. 4109. You’ll receive a response within 48 hours. Please call 911 if it is an emergency.

Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible
Many Catholics want to read the Bible because they know it is God’s Word, but they give up because it seems complicated. Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible helps you get the “big picture” by showing how fourteen narrative books of the Bible tell the complete story from Adam and Eve to Christ and the Church.

If you loved Fr. Mike Schmitz's Bible in a Year, you'll enjoy how Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible presenter Jeff Cavins shows you how to read the Bible so that you can understand it. Both Jeff and Fr. Mike use the Great Adventure Bible Timeline aided by the unique color-coded Bible Timeline® Chart, which arranges the key people, places, and events of Scripture in chronological order.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) for ages 3-12
CGS is an approach to faith formation where children are formed in the Catholic faith in a sacred space called the ‘atrium.’
Focus on Psalm 23
We reflect with the children on the verses of Psalm 23 depending upon their age. For 3-6-year-old children, we may only begin with Psalm 23:1 and may add verses 2 and 3 for 4 and 5-year-olds. For 6-8-year-olds we may only reflect on Psalm 23:1-4 and for the 9-12-year-olds we will reflect upon the entire psalm 1-6.
Psalm 23: 1-2
The Lord is my Shepherd, I have everything I need.
In green pastures you let me graze;
to safe waters you lead me;
When one is entrusted to such a shepherd, then one can want for nothing. The shepherd provides everything for his sheep; for their eating and drinking and rest. “Waters are especially rare and precious in so arid a land as Israel; for the shepherd to procure water for his sheep is
something very great for Jewish listeners. (Ways to Nurture the Relationship with God by Sofia
Cavalletti, page 37)
To learn more about CGS at St. Patrick Catholic Church, visit the atrium, serve or train as a catechist, email Kim Ward, or call 253-274-4108.
Visit the national CGS Association website and the local consortium website, The Sheepfold, for more information about the CGS approach to faith formation.

Statement on COVID-19
By the instruction of the Holy See and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, using all current COVID-19 vaccines during this pandemic is morally acceptable. It is crucial for one’s health, but it is also our responsibility to care for the common good of the broader community, and getting a vaccine is one way to do so. Everyone age 5+ is eligible to receive the vaccine. Do so knowing that it is morally acceptable to receive whichever vaccine is offered.
Masks are optional as of March 12, 2022. A section for physically distanced seating is available. The obligation to attend Mass does not bind in impossible or gravely difficult situations.
