A Note from Scott and Marsha
March 31, 2022
What a whirl wind of a week! We had our FGS Spring Market last Saturday and the weather was spectacular, the people were awesome, and the garden was filled with music and smiles. Carts and carts of flowers were rolling out one by one. The staff may have been tired Monday morning but it's Mondays when we're glad we chose to close the Garden Center to re-group, re-order and catch our breath.

We have so many new faces in the garden this year! This picture captures one of many new faces. Meet Sydney.

Sydney is a senior at NC State and is interning this spring. She has literally jumped in and been helping wherever she can with our events side of the business. She has attended and helped with classes. She runs errands. She enters information, sends emails, and she has even jumped into some of our fun ideas. She is a rock star!

Recently, Lizzie had a secret idea. To celebrate the spring kick-off at The Potting Shed, she wanted specialty cookies. So off she went tasking Sydney to design four themed cookies.

When the cookies arrived, Lizzie said, "I have a surprise for you. Meet me at The Potting Shed."

I secretly hoped it was an Espresso machine that her and Scott ordered so I could be a barista. That would be my morning job at FGS and then I would do my other jobs in the afternoon!

Nope. It wasn't an Espresso machine. It were adorable cookies that have our logo, an adorable bicycle, a succulent pun, and the cookie that Sydney is holding. If you will look closer, you will see not only is she adorable holding the cookie but look closer. Look at the goat. Look closely. The goat has three legs.

Yep. Sydney actually designed the goat cookies around our beloved three-legged goat. And for that, she will receive an Intern of the Century award. That was brilliant. Brilliant.

So even though I can't serve you coffee and cookies, a killer combination, we still have Sunset Slush and your favorite local liquids. Nothing says stay all day like a drink and touring the tables of beautiful blooms, perusing the shade garden, and meandering through the houseplants with drink in hand. Whether it is water or a Sunset Slush Pour Over, you simply must stay hydrated.

And after you've done all the damage you can, don't forget to stop and see Tripod. (Who recently got a review on Instagram, "3/4 legs, 5/5 stars." We agree.) He waits patiently for you and even if he might be the last to arrive at the fence, he truly is the cutest one. Your heart will actually sigh.
GARDEN CENTER FEATURES
CRASSULA OVATA JADE PLANT
Sometimes referred to as a friendship plant, money plant, or silver dollar plant, Crassula Ovata is an easy to grow succulent which, with proper care, can live for generations. They love bright, indirect sunlight and prefer the soil to dry out between waterings. Jade plants are great office plants and with the right conditions, they'll bloom little starry white or pink flowers in the spring!
HANGING BASKETS
Spring means color - and we're spilling out the sides with all these annuals and perennials, including pre-made hanging baskets! We have baskets made with mixtures of color or baskets with one color so you can curate the perfect look for your porch. Want to get creative and build your own basket? We have dozens of colors, sizes, and varieties so you can get your hands dirty. Just make sure not to overplant the basket. And don't forget to use the thrill, fill, spill method to make your basket POP!

We'll also have a hanging basket workshop on the schedule soon, so keep an eye out if you're looking for extra help building the hanging basket of your dreams!
JAPANESE SNOWBELL STYRAX
The Japanese Snowbell Styrax blooms bell-shaped pink or white flowers in late spring. With its light fragrance and striking contrast between the dark foliage and light flowers, it is the perfect addition to your Secret Garden. The Japanese Snowbell can grow over 25 feet tall which makes it the perfect place to build a relaxing bench or create an outdoor dining area for picture-perfect tea parties. When fall comes around, the leaves will turn into gorgeous shades of yellow and red. What could be more delightful?
