Happy Monday — and please buckle up, everyone.

All of the Montrose wines offered today will take you for the ride of your life! This estate is a perennial favorite of ours (Christine, Joe, James) but these vintages specificaly are otherworldly.

Getting perfectly stored library vintages directly from the Chateau's cellars at the most competitive pricing is a wonderful opportunity for both Bordeaux collectors and curious connoisseurs alike. Even better — the 2nd & 3rd label vintages are drinkable now, yet can cruise for another decade.

Established as a Second Growth in the 1855 classification, Chateau Montrose is one of the leading properties in the Medoc; La Dame de Montrose is their second label. While the classification has pros and cons, if nothing else, it lets you know that these wines have an impressive historic pedigree. One of the leading properties in the Medoc, Montrose is located along the Gironde estuary. The proximity of the estuary ensures a microclimate that protects against frost, and the vines, which lie on deep clay-gravel soils, benefit from a south-easterly aspect.

Montrose is a large estate, with about 150 acres of vineyards, planted to 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. The winery enjoys an exceptional geographical situation in Saint-Estèphe, facing the Gironde estuary. Its 95-hectare (235-acre) vineyard thus benefits from the moderating influence of the vast water mass nearby during very hot summers and harsh winters. The vineyard is in a single sweep, a rare and priceless advantage in the region. The soil, consisting of deep gravel over clay, favors natural drainage and ensures that the vines benefit from a slow and regular water supply from the water reserves in the subsoil.

Made to the same rigorous standards as their First Wine, from grapes grown in the same vineyard, La Dame de Montrose is less elaborately complex than the First Wine and meant for earlier enjoyment.

Supple and silky Merlot generally predominates in the varietal mix. Its very pronounced red fruit aromas and flavors reflect another expression of the terroir. Consistently reliable and reaching maturity sooner, the wine was created in 1983 in tribute to Yvonne Charmolüe, who ran Château Montrose single-handedly from 1944 to 1960. Production varies from one year to another but accounts on average for 40 à 45% of the total production of the Montrose vineyard. Aged for 12 months in 30% new french oak barrels.

The 2018 Bordeaux vintage has received incredible ratings already:

  • Vinous Media, 95-97 points; "The best 2018s are aromatically intense, deep, dark wines that beautifully marry fruit intensity with structure. A strong vintage for the Left Bank"

  • Wine Spectator, 96 points; "The best reds are dense and tannic, with slightly higher alcohol and lower acidity, but terrific drive and definition"

While Wine Advocate hasn't yet rated the vintage as a whole, here are a couple excerpts from reviewer Lisa Perrotti-Brown's article on the Bordeaux of 2018:

  • "Rich, already flamboyant fruit and beautifully plush tannins with seamless acidity mean many of the successful wines will be approachable relatively early."

  • "At the very peak of quality, the 2018s are mind-blowingly incredible."

The 2015 vintage was described as "PERFECTLY ALIGNED" and also one of the greatest for Bordeaux!

  • "97 Points. Truly an incredible vintage. Perhaps, not quite at the level of 2009, but close. Pomerol and Saint Emilion are just stunning! Rich, ripe, fleshy, opulent and even decadent, the wines taste and feel great! Margaux is a revelation. In the Medoc, St. Estephe can be weak, but good wines were produced in Pauillac and Saint Julien. Drink or hold." -The Wine Cellar Insider

  • "Two thousand fifteen has turned out to be a fabulous vintage for Bordeaux. I was impressed by how much freshness and structure the 2015s show today... the best wines are truly phenomenal." -Antonio Galloni

  • Bordeaux 2015 Vintage Sets Record for 100-point Wines - Wine Enthusiast

  • Wine Spectator, 94 points "Extremely dry season saved by rain at veraison led to an even crop of ripe and lush reds. Later rains hampered some parts of the upper Médoc. Margaux is truly special, St. Julien and Pessac superb"

  • "Bordeaux 2015 was one of the rare years when the city's oenology school, which releases detailed overviews of every vintage dating back to the 1960s, declared that 'all five conditions necessary for a great red wine vintage in Bordeaux were perfectly aligned'." -Decanter Magazine

  • "2015 is a great vintage, the best one since the supercharged twin years of 2009-10. " -Bloomberg

  • Vinous Media, 93-96 points"Bordeaux enjoyed its strongest vintage in a number of years in 2015. The warm, dry summer yielded opulent wines built on intense fruit and voluptuous textures. At their best, the 2015s are spectacularly rich, racy wines loaded with personality. On the Right Bank, the wines are intense and, at times, freakishly concentrated."

Cheers,
—James Tran

2018 Chateau Montrose Saint Estephe "La Dame de Montrose"

Comes in 12-Pack Original Wood Case

94 Points - James Suckling:
"Very pretty blackcurrants and blueberries with floral undertones, following through to a full body with layers of ripe, polished tannins and a rich, flavorful finish. Needs time to come around and show itself. Try after 2025." (Jan 2021)

94 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"The second wine of Château Montrose is a major star in its own right. With dense tannins and concentrated black fruits, it has power and richness. The wine's potential, impressive for a second wine, is very evident in the structure. Drink from 2026." - Roger Voss (5/1/2021)

93 Points - Decanter:
"Visually gorgeous with bright plum colour. Black cherry and damson on the first sip, clear oak influence with flexible but far-reaching tannic structure. Some real tension and balance - no question that this has a long life ahead of it. Juicy also; for a second wine we are right up there." - Jane Anson (Nov 2020)

2016 Chateau Montrose Saint Estephe "La Dame de Montrose"

Comes in 12-Pack Original Wood Case

93 Points - James Suckling:
"Extremely perfumed and beautiful with bright, violet and plum aromas. Full to medium body, very fine and firm tannins and transparent fruit. Linear and refined with a very long finish. Second wine of Château Montrose. Try in 2022." (17 Jan, 2019)

93 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"The 2016 Dame de Montrose is also gorgeous, and the second wines of Bordeaux continue to gain in quality. A blend of 52% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, aged in 30% new oak, this beauty has impressive amounts of creme de cassis, graphite, violets, and damp earth that give way to a medium to full-bodied, layered, pure, and seamless beauty that has real class. It’s well worth seeking out and will hopefully help you to keep your hands off the grand vin for at least a few years." - Jeb Dunnuck (2/28/2019)

2005 Chateau Montrose Saint Estephe

One of the Century's Great Vintages
Comes in 12-Pack Original Wood Case

97 Points - Robert Parker's WA
"Tasted at the vertical in London, the 2005 Montrose came and delivered the goods. This was the best example of the 2005 that I have tasted, perhaps a wine that is going to prove that, the longer wine lovers can resist temptation. It is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 3.5% Cabernet Franc and .5% Petit Verdot picked between 23 September and 9 October. The bouquet is extremely detailed, displaying more red berry fruit compared to the 2010 Montrose that leans towards black. Graphite and cedar emerge with time, even an unusual floral scent that is uncommon with respect to this property, whilst all the time retaining fantastic focus and delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with a ferrous tincture on the entry. There are the first signs of secondary notes (dried leaves and bay leaf), but it is the tannic backbone and the precision that really defines this Montrose at the moment. For certain, it is masculine and structured, yet it has enormous potential, perhaps more than was suggested when it was first released? This is for the long term, but you know that already." -NM (3/17)

97 Points - Vinous:
"The 2005 Montrose is spectacular. Bright, perfumed and vertically explosive, the 2005 possesses remarkable energy right out of the gate. In 2005, Montrose doesn't quite have the heft that it can, but that actually works to its advantage. Readers will find a wine that marries elegance with power so well. Gravel, dried herb, lavender and mocha lend striking complexity to the dark fruit in this gorgeous, regal Montrose. If anything, the 2005 still needs more time in bottle!" -Antonio Galloni (4/21)

2012 Chateau Montrose Saint Estephe

95 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"Produced in the magnificent new cellars at Montrose, this big, tannic wine is powerful and concentrated. It has something of the classic severity of a wine from this estate, but that's mitigated by the ripe, generous blackberry fruitiness and the final freshness of a 2012. A great success, to drink from 2022." - Roger Voss (5/1/2015)

94 Points - James Suckling:
"Fascinating aromas of blackberries with cacao and buttery notes. This is a full-bodied red combining well-rounded tannins, lovely acidity and a mouth-watering finish. Yet turns firm and powerful. Drink in 2020." (2/8/2015)
