Focus on the Masters and the Ventura County Arts Council are joining together to provide scholarship funds and exhibition opportunities to high school seniors who plan to pursue art studies in college. This year, the Tamima Al-Awar Memorial Scholarship program will provide over $4,400 in scholarships and the opportunity for all students applying to exhibit their work at the Ventura County Government Center in Ventura. The competition is open to high school seniors who reside in Ventura County and who show in their application a commitment to further study in the visual arts. Recipients for these scholarships are chosen by a distinguished panel of jurors from our art community, based on artistic merit and visual arts academic commitment as demonstrated by the student's application, portfolio and essay submitted.

Ventura County Arts Council website Wednesday February 11, 2015.
Incomplete or late submittals will not be reviewed. Submissions must be signed by a faculty member of the student's high school and a parent. Parent & teacher signatures must be scanned and included with the application. Students may also fax or mail the signature page separately to the Ventura County Arts Council at 646 County Square Drive, Suite 154, Ventura, CA 93003-0436. FAX: 805.658.2281. There is no limit to the number of applications per school.
All students applying for the scholarship will be invited to exhibit their work in Expressions of Our Youth a group exhibition at the Ventura County Government Center shown from February 20 through April 7, 2015. The scholarships will be presented to the recipients at the Reception & Awards Ceremony Friday, March 6 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The Ventura County Government Center exhibition provides the students with the unique opportunity to exhibit their work in a prestigious venue and work with art professionals in a real life environment.
About The Tamima Al-Awar Memorial Scholarship: The goal of the Tamima Al-Awar Memorial Scholarship is to award annual scholarships to Ventura County high school seniors for advanced visual art studies and to provide the students with a professional exhibition opportunity. The panel's recommendations will be forwarded to the Ventura County Arts Council for final approval. Scholarships will be presented in full at the Ventura County Government Center Opening Reception & Awards Ceremony, Friday, March 6 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The Tamima Al-Awar Memorial Scholarship was established by FOTM Patron and Al-Awar Family friend, Paula Spellman. This year's scholarships are funded by the Al-Awar Family, Paula Spellman and Theodore Miller with administration provided by FOTM and the VCAC. Both organizations are non-profit 501(c)(3) organizations.
About Tamima Al-Awar: Tamima was a graduate of The Thacher School where she discovered her passion for painting. She had planned to pursue a degree in Fine Arts at The Academy of Art College in San Francisco starting in January 2003. At the time of her passing she was enrolled in a painting course at Santa Barbara City College and painted actively at her home studio.
Contributions to the scholarship fund are always welcome and are tax deductible.
