Today is Martin Luther's birthday - our favorite day here at the 5PF editorial offices! What a perfect opportunity to catch up on five items from Virginia Synod youth and young adult ministries!

5PF VOLUME ONE ISSUE NINE will come to all subscribers on Friday, Nov. 24. When you've recovered from your Thanksgiving excess, be sure to read it! NOTE: towards the end of the calendar year, we will consolidate our subscription list so that (in addition to all clergy and congregations, who are captive to the subscription list, so to speak) only those who subscribe will continue to receive the newsletter. Hit the button at the bottom if you want to be sure not to miss a single issue! Additional NOTE: to UN-subscribe, please send a request to our circulation office at delaney@vasynod.org.

Results from Issue 1:7 Random Debate: "Which Reformation doctrine is most important to you?" A whopping 71% of us saved sinners who responded said "Justification by grace through faith alone," while "Priesthood of all believers" got 17% of the vote and "Bible in the language of the people" garnered 13%. We do love God's grace, don't we!

THIS WEEK'S RANDOM DEBATE:

How will you celebrate Martin Luther's birthday (Nov. 10, 1483)?
Read all 73 volumes of Luther's Works
Read maybe a couple of paragraphs of Luther, like the Small Catechism
Pass a kidney stone (one of Luther's favorite things to do)

The 5 Petals for Vol. 1 Issue 7 of 5PF...

MEMBERS OF YOUR VIRGINIA SYNOD LUTHERAN YOUTH ORGANIZATION BOARD traveled to the ELCA churchwide offices in Chicago this past weekend to participate in the annual "ELCA Youth Leadership Summit." Somehow, Synod Youth Director Dave Delaney failed to get a single photograph of our group, but it included 11th grade representative Susanna Carr (First English, Richmond) and Kat Kolodinsky (Muhlenberg, Harrisonburg). In addition, our Synod LYO President Asher Porter (Our Saviour, Christiansburg) was there as part of the Youth Core Leadership Team that planned this event. There were nearly 100 youth and adult participants from 40 of the ELCA's 65 synods, reflecting on the event theme, "Called on the Way," based on John 14:6. Can you pick out any of those from Virginia Synod in the above photo? (Hint: Asher *is* the second row (or third if you count the two guys taking naps) at the front, Kat is in the row behind him, and Susanna is in the row behind her. Guess where Dave is?)

You might want to read this new book!

-Remind Me Again, by Joe Davis (spoken word artist and frequent collaborator with David "AGAPE*" Scherer) has written this book whose subtitle is "Poems and Practices for Remembering Who We Are." Every poem is accompanied by a suggested an action or practice to help readers connect the themes to their everyday lives.

It works great either as a personal devotional tool or with groups who want to experience a fresh take on important facets of personal and faith formation.

It's published by Sparkhouse, so you can get it through augsburgfortress.org, but Amazon also has it.

Reflecting with Martin Luther

Okay, so this is supposed to be an AI generated image of Martin Luther. A couple of things: No one in the editorial offices of 5PF was very impressed. In fact, it looks more artificial than the famous painted images of his own day. Plus - and here's the interesting thing - after trying four different AI programs to see if any of them could draw Martin Luther as he might have looked today or even putting him in contemporary clothes, not one of them seemed able to do that. Apparently it's just too hard to imagine him as a modern guy. They always came back looking like the same 16th century Luther we've seen in his portraits. We're not sure what that means, but one thing is for sure: As flawed as Luther was (as we *all* are), some of his words ring as true now as they did then, even if he isn't sporting an undercut hair style or billowing denim jeans.

"A youth who believes in Christ has victory over everything over which Satan has power. Thus he has victory, not in such a way that sin, an evil conscience, and death are not felt, but because they are overcome. For Christ is greater." (Luther's Works, vol. 30, p. 247 - homily on I John 2:3, alt.)
