The Workforce Development Board of Contra Costa County recently received a $500,000 planning grant to advance the East Bay Health Equity Initiative. Awarded by the California Workforce Development Board (CWDB) in partnership with the California Labor & Workforce Development Agency, the grant is part of $41 million to 18 projects across the state to advance High Road Training Partnerships (HRTPs) that move underserved populations into better jobs.
“With this planning grant, we will build the infrastructure for a larger effort to help under-represented populations secure high-quality careers and advance in the health field,” said WDBCCC Program Manager Jed Silver. He said the effort will ensure that elements supporting success are included in health training programs throughout the region, including:
- Targeted recruitment
- Financial support, including stipends and completion bonuses
- Academic support, including tutoring and exam prep
- Direct job placement into entry-level roles
- Career advancement services
The WDBCCC is responsible for establishing the partnerships and agreements to make resources available and a sustainability plan to ensure the partnerships continue past the life of the grant. Partners include Oakland WDB, Richmond WDB, Alameda County WDB, community colleges, adult schools, community clinics and health care providers in those areas. The effort will also explore how to use intermediaries to more efficiently deploy resources and support services where and when they are needed most.
