What we are working on, looking at, thinking about, and inspired by.

BIAMD's #5ThoughtsFriday - 01/06/2017
Here are the 5 things we thought were worth sharing with you this week:
5) January Is Winter Sports TBI Awareness Month.. .

As 2017 begins, we wanted to take a moment to highlight January as   National Winter Sports TBI Awareness Month and highlight the importance of sports safety when participating in winter sports, such as, ice hockey, skiing, sledding, snowboarding, ice skating, and snowmobiling.

Winter sports brain traumas are in the top 10 of the highest number of estimated head injuries treated in U.S. hospital emergency rooms. In 2009, the Consumer Product Safety Commission estimated that over 20,000 reported emergency room visits were from winter sports and this number is thought to increase every year.

4) We pause briefly for station identification...

"Partners in Progress" on March 23-24, 2017,  is a multi-track neuro- conference focusing on issues related to: individuals with brain injury and family members, children and adolescents in the school system, advocacy, and professional and clinical training. The purpose of the two-day conference is to provide state-of-the-art information about brain injury treatment, services, research, and advocacy , and to improve collaboration and networking between individuals with brain injury, families and professionals.

3)  But even if you try to get away from the cold by heading to the beach to surf...

After weeks in the powerful surf of the South Pacific, she was excited to be surfing the barreling wave at Point Mugu for the NVBC Point Mugu Surf Contest in Ventura, even if she was less than thrilled to be competing the day after getting off the plane. She breezed through the early rounds of the event, and scored an 8-point ride on her first wave of the finals. But on her second wave, her whole life changed...

2)  What we're reading that you might enjoy ...

Heads Up! is an inspirational book of a boy's struggle with injury, recovery, and learning to keep a positive attitude in the face of adversity.

A boy's unfortunate surfing accident becomes a heartfelt endeavor which strengthens the lives of one family. Children will learn valuable lessons of responsibility, patience, respect, and unconditional love. They will be inspired to follow their dreams - an enchanting theme our young author shares with readers. Parents will take pleasure in reading along with their children ages 4+.

1)  Quote we are contemplating...

"You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it."
