TGB Approves Rental Policy for Covid, Trespass, and HIP Homes
By Joe Morey
News Editor
The Lac Courte Oreilles Tribal Governing Board (TGB) unanimously approved instituting a rental policy for Tribal Members occupying the Covid homes, trespass homes and HIP Homes on the Reservation.
The new policy states any person staying in one of the aforementioned homes when there is no longer an immediate emergency or no longer has Covid, they will be required to pay $500 per month for a 90-day lease, which will include utilities.
James Schlender Jr, the Tribe’s Attorney General, stated the TGB had several objectives which included addressing the homeless who had nowhere to go and were in need for a while; providing a policy for when they were no longer in that situation and a way for them to transition from that situation; and for persons coming out of treatment facilities and had nowhere to go.

Health Director Shares Info on Need for New Clinic
By Joe Morey
News Editor
Gary Girard, the Lac Courte Oreilles Community Health Center Director, shared information on the new clinic project at the General Membership Meeting held at the Sevenwinds Casino Convention Center, reporting on current staffing and space issues and how they will be solved once the new clinic is complete.
Girard said the new clinic, which will be located near the casino, may see groundbreaking as early as late March/early April of 2023 and would be completed by fall of 2024.
The clinic currently has eight providers and eight nurses on staff but only has 1.4 exam rooms per provider.
“Over the last two years we’ve seen more patients than ever,” Girard explained. “We are in a situation right now that we can’t meet the needs of the community. The building is too small.”

Chairman Taylor Gives Update on Proposed Tiny Homes Community
By Joe Morey
News Editor
Earlier this year the Lac Courte Oreilles Tribal Governing Board (TGB) approved purchasing and developing a community of tiny homes on the Reservation to tackle the homelessness problem, which currently results in nearly a million dollars spent yearly in hotel rooms in the Hayward area.
LCO Tribal Chairman, Louis Taylor, told LCO News that the plan is still being discussed at the TGB level, but a location hasn’t been decided on, nor has the decision to either purchase the homes or build them ourselves.

New Fire Chief Meets with TGB to Discuss EMS and Fire Prevention Certifications
By Joe Morey
News Editor
New interim LCO Fire Department Chief Marvin Mullet came before the Tribal Governing Board (TGB) on Monday, Nov. 7, at their weekly meeting to discuss his first couple weeks on the job. He said he held a meeting with previous fire department personnel and several from Bass Lake to go over a few of their concerns.
One of the issues the TGB has had is that the fire department personnel weren’t state certified, and Mullet was chosen for the position because of his certifications, which includes emergency medical responder, with credentials for water and ice rescues.
Mullet has 20 years of experience and has been with Bass Lake since 2005 serving as their chief for the past several years.

Fighting fentanyl: Schools tackle opioid crisis head-on
By Kara Arundel
k12dive.com
When two 8th grade students died within days of each other in 2016 after using synthetic opioids, the Park City School District in Utah went into full crisis response mode.
Grief counselors came to the students’ middle school. Parents were asked to search their children’s possessions. Area emergency room doctors were warned to look for signs of drug abuse or attempted suicide in teen patients. District and school staff were asked to comfort each other through their grief.
Six years later, the deaths of the young students are still raw, said then-Superintendent Ember Conley.
