Eight-Million Dollars Raised for New State-Of-The-Art Wildlife Hospital

Pelican Harbor Seabird Station (PHSS), Miami’s native wildlife rehabilitation center, is spreading its wings and expanding its impact within the community as we near the construction of our brand new facility at 399 NE 82nd Terrace in the city’s Oakland Grove neighborhood on the Little River. This $8 million milestone brings us 57% of the way to our $14 million goal, and the success of this capital campaign demonstrates the lasting legacy of PHSS founders Darlene and Harry Kelton, who established Pelican Harbor Seabird Station over forty years ago.

The new 2.6-acre property, previously owned by historical Miami icon Julia Tuttle, is uniquely positioned at the crossroads of the communities of Miami, Little Haiti, and El Portal and is truly an urban oasis. The modern wildlife hospital and nature center will be eight times larger than its current facility, allowing for state-of-the-art, individualized care for every patient. PHSS admits over 2,200 patients of around 130 different species annually. In addition to the wildlife hospital, this site will be open daily and serve as an education center, public nature park, Tequesta archeological preserve, and a manatee viewing location. “This is a unique opportunity in Miami’s rich history to invest in the next iteration of Pelican Harbor Seabird Station. We are excited to welcome new donors and Foundations to partner with us in a meaningful way on this incredible facility. Together we will make Miami a better place for migratory birds, native wildlife, and the communities we serve.” said PHSS Executive Director, Christopher Boykin.

The Batchelor and Deeks Foundations provided the initial capital to fund the dream of a new Pelican Harbor Seabird Station by offering matching grants totaling $1,900,000.

A special thanks also to The Clinton Foundation, The Three Opinions Foundation, Laurence V. Baldwin, and the State of Florida for their significant contributions.
