A Dream Realizable

Hello Bari!

At Community Renewal we celebrate the 60th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s “I Have A Dream” speech and the march on Washington. In his speech, he spoke of the loneliness of poverty, the sense of being a citizen exiled from the promise of our great nation. But he also suggested we are capable of repairing this wrong — that would, indeed create a “rock of brotherhood” where the destiny of all peoples were tied together.

However, for this to become true he also spoke of urgency - “the fierce urgency of now.”

Dr. King felt this in 1963. Now, 60 years later, that dream has not been fully realized, but the march continues and “the stone of hope” remains. A dream of brotherhood (and sisterhood) where all human beings can come and create a symphony of the family of humankind.

Community Renewal has walked the path and shared Martin Luther King’s dream for over 30 years. Our founder Mack McCarter walked the streets and knocked on the doors in Shreveport, Louisiana, building friendships– person by person, home by home, neighborhood by neighborhood, and has walked the talk of intentional, connected caring. Today, that has grown into a movement we call the We Care Team.

In celebration of the 60th anniversary of MLK’s speech, more than 350,000 people are expected to travel to Washington, DC. We welcome this moment to reflect on where we’ve come as a community– as a society– in the past 60 years, and where we will go in the next 60, or even the next 6 years!

Will you join us as part of the We Care Team? We are determined to renew our commitment to the ideals the MLK shared in 1968, and we are determined to repair our world, our communities, our neighborhoods, and our relationships through intentional, connected caring. Visibly shared and celebrated TOGETHER!

You can join the We Care Team by submitting your name and contact details at this link.

We will be sharing opportunities for the planned activities in the coming days, but for now we invite you to watch or read the speech by clicking the image below.
