April 2019
A Message from our CEO
- Marjorie Vaneskahian Burr -

I truly value our volunteers and have gotten to know many of you over the years! I began my career at Allen Community Outreach as the Volunteer Director in 2001 and for years have made some dear friends with many dedicated people who support our mission. April is "Volunteer Appreciation Month", and I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of our volunteers with this message. Please know that you are appreciated each and every day for your countless hours and commitment to help local families. Our logo shows supportive hands in a heart, and nothing says it better about our volunteers working hand-in-hand with a passion and love for what they do.... (read more)

We Are Grateful For Our Caring Volunteers

April is National Volunteer Month, and these pictures show a few of our amazing volunteers who have given their precious time to help our mission. ACO is immensely grateful for all 3,400+ volunteers who together gave close to 28,000 volunteer hours in 2018.

"Our volunteers keep
the heart of our organization pumping and, for that I am forever grateful", said Janis Christie, Director of Volunteer Services.

All of our active volunteers are invited to a Volunteer Orientation in the ACO Community Room on:

May 22 at 8:30 a.m.
June 5 at 4:30 p.m.

Please email Janis at  jchristie@acocares.org to R.S.V.P. for the orientation.

Empty Bowls

A big thank you to everyone who came out to Empty Bowls  held on April 5th at the Allen High School Performing Arts Center. It was a fun event that helped raise awareness about hunger in our community while also celebrating our student artists. We sold over 200 kids' bowls and many hand-crafted, artisan bowls that were created and donated by local artists. A  special thank you to Justin Preston and the Visual Arts Teachers from the Allen ISD schools, to the VALA artisans and to our food sponsors listed below for providing delicious bowl-friendly foods and treats.

Did you know?

Allen Community Outreach resale stores are great places to find bargains.  The stores also help people in need and serve as a limited recycle center.

When you donate items to Allen Community Outreach, they are first
sorted. Items in good shape are sent to the Resale Store on Main Street; usable items that show wear are sent to the Treasure Chest; and outstanding donations, such as upscale new and gently used items and antiques, go to the Boutique.

ACO clients who are in need of household items and/or clothing and shoes for themselves and their children receive gift cards to buy goods in the Resale Store. Many of the items you donate directly help our neighbors in need.

And what about the stuff that, frankly, you weren't sure whether or not to donate? ( read more)
