Greetings!

What a wonderful way to start the Lenten season! There was such a strong presence of the Spirit in our worship followed by a wonderful meal afterwards! Thanks to Louis Ramirez for "off the chain" music! Thanks to Pam Fairbanks for the amazing home-cooked food after worship! Thanks to Pablo Jose Penate and his team for changing the sanctuary colors from green to purple last Saturday. Thanks to Dean Coffey and Martin Miny (and some extra volunteers!) who have been working outside to beautify our landscaping. And thanks to all who led in worship, either behind the scenes or in front of the cameras. I'm so proud of all you do in ministry here at Founders!

I hear both the in-house and online "Sermon Talk-Backs" were engaging and exciting. Thanks to Larry Rodriguez, Rev. Cindy Solomon-Klebba, and Pastor Bam Noriega for leading these sessions. Did you miss one? Don't worry - join them this coming week! You will be blessed!

I'm excited to see so many of you meeting for practice for our upcoming Passion Play that will be presented on Palm Sunday next month. Rev. Eric Buter (Director) and Peter Kirkpatrick (Passion Play Music Director) are working hard to make sure everyone is prepared to make this the biggest and best presentation ever. I expect our church will be packed for this production! Let's keep these folks in prayer as they prepare to bless us!

This Sunday, we will continue our Lenten sermon series (Changing The World) with a message entitled, Acts Of Service In Our Communities. I hope you're as excited as I am about this sermon series. I truly believe that how we love and treat one another CAN change the world! If you'd like to read ahead, check out these scriptures, all taken from the New International Version: Galatians 5:13, Matthew 25:40, I John 3:18, Proverbs 19:17, and Hebrews 13:16.

I look forward to worship with you once again this week!

Pastor Keith

Readings are taken from the New International Version.

Galatians 5:13

You, my siblings, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.

Matthew 25:40

The Sovereign will reply, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these siblings of mine, you did for me.”

I John 3:18

Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

Proverbs 19:17

Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

Hebrews 13:16

And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

This year, Founders MCC will be leading a procession down Vermont on Good Friday at 6 pm.

Immediately after, we will meet together for a bilingual Good Friday service, "Stations of the Cross" in the Sanctuary.

The Stations of the Cross service will focus on current social justice issues we are experiencing, along with traditional scripture readings and music. The issues could consist of:

Gaza, the Supreme Court, erasure of trans people and American history, authoritarianism, transphobia/homophobia, ICE, immigration, environmental crisis, poverty, homelessness, hunger, and Christian nationalism.

If you feel called to speak in this service on any of these issues (Max 3 mins, English or Spanish), please let Rev. Eric Buter, Lucia Chappelle, or email at justice@foundersmcc.org.

This is a wonderful opportunity to share a message, thoughts, and feelings about what surrounds us in the world today.

With the ICE, Homeland Security, and Border Patrol raids occurring so frequently here in Los Angeles, we at FMCC/ICMF realize the fear that many of our congregants have in leaving their homes. We are initializing an immediate ministry called, ANGELS. This ministry is for those who may be fearful of going to the grocery store, the pharmacy, and the department store and need to reach out to an ANGEL for help. It is also for people who may be willing to run these errands (for those too fearful to leave home currently) to let us know you're willing to BE an ANGEL. So, if you need an ANGEL, or if you're willing to be an ANGEL, please contact us at care@mccla.org and we'll match you up if at all possible.

Rapid Response Network Launches Hotline to Protect Immigrants From ICE Raids in Los Angeles, 888-624-4752

There continues to be a need for a "White Wall" to help protect the attendees of our 1:30 Spanish-speaking service. Please see Pastor Keith.

Join CLUE (Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice) and other social justice groups who have been gathering weekly in Los Angeles to pray for the return of family members who have been detained or deported.

We invite people of all genders to accompany them and hold our disappeared community members in prayer. We are hurting along with them, and we have their backs.

This vigil takes place every Tuesday, Noon at the Los Angeles Federal Building.

Covid-19 Protocols

As we continue to cope with Covid-19, we are changing our protocols. The new protocols are in line with the rest of LA County. Until further notice, here are our guidelines:

1. We will no longer require vaccinations and boosters for church attendance, though we highly encourage them.
2. We will make wearing masks optional. Please feel free to continue wearing masks as you feel comfortable.

3. We ask people that have symptoms of (or tested positive for) Covid, flu, monkeypox, or any other easily communicable disease to please refrain from attending until they are well.

As we have from the very beginning of the pandemic, we will continue to keep in line with the advice of the LA County Public Health Department. Thank you so much for your patience as we navigate new guidelines.

Second Sunday of Lent

Reading 1: Genesis 12:1-4a

Reading 2: Matthew 17:1-19

Greetings dear friends,

I am Rev. Elder Aaron Miller, the Sr. Pastor of the Metropolitan Community Church of Hartford in Hartford CT USA and I bring you greetings from the Council of Elders, our Moderator, the Governing Board, and MCC Staff.

I was delighted to discover that I would be offering a reflection on the Transfiguration of Jesus. As someone who identifies as transgender, this is perhaps my favorite epiphany in the Bible. And, it is something that resonates deeply with me, given my gender transition led to a transfiguration.

The scripture in Matthew 17:1-9 invites us to imagine us climbing with the disciples Peter, James, and John as they follow Jesus up to the mountaintop. Keep in mind this is late in the gospel and Jesus will soon head toward Jerusalem to face the events of Holy Week.

No one has ever been able to fully explain what actually happened to Jesus during the transfiguration. Unlike Moses, whose face radiated the divine glory as a result of speaking with God on a different mountain--Mt. Sinai (Ex 34:29), Jesus' transfiguration emanates from within. He is physically transfigured and his clothes became radiant. And, in that moment, Jesus revealed his true and authentic self to his closest friends’ (much like ‘coming out’ -- without words) and provided a glimpse of divine glory while confirming his identity as God's Beloved.

The Transfiguration is a moment, like no other, and truly unimaginable in human terms.

Or is it?

Maybe this is possible to imagine…especially if we have experienced God’s presence in some way. As I live my life in truth and with authenticity --- as WHO I am---and after realizing that I, too, am beloved of God, I know this glory now emanates from within me, as well.

Jesus changed physically and even his clothes were changed to dazzling white. I know what it is to ‘dazzle’ --- when blouses became shirts and skirts become pants. It may well be that when we are authentically WHO we are and created to become----that we can fully open to a divine experience of God’s glory. And, yes, DAZZLE!

To quote Toba Beta “When higher beings allow us to see them, that's the very moment we begin to be one of them.” I imagine that Peter, James, and John were forever changed --- even radiating---as Jesus did.

Like those early disciples, we may want to stay on the mountaintop – which is glory-us (glorious). And yet Jesus and the disciples had more to accomplish in the short time remaining. So, down the mountain they went…just as WE must, too.

What sticks with me though---especially in the perilous times we are in----is what God spoke on that mountain. God spoke the same words that were spoken to Jesus’ at his baptism in the Jordan River---at the very beginning of his ministry; God saying "This is my Son, the Beloved; with whom I am well pleased” Only---this time, God adds the directive: “listen to him!"

I believe this has become a ‘clarion call’ for this very ‘moment.’ In Matthew’s gospel, some 5 chapters later, Jesus will be asked by one of the scribes “which commandment is the most important of all?

And Jesus will reply “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37-39). Jesus made it crystal clear. The greatest command is to LOVE….LOVE….God, ourselves, and one another.

There were many false prophets during the time of Jesus just as there are today. Honestly, I don’t recognize the Jesus that many Christians speak about. If it is not of love----it is not of God---for God IS love.

Jesus is still speaking today----the question that remains is…. are we listening?

Or are we listening to the love-less and even hateful words that are spoken in his name?

As we celebrate Transfiguration Sunday, my prayer is that we do what God has directed us to do – listen to Jesus. Then let’s to come down the mountain to share his heart and love with the world. I believe this will make us radiant…and who knows…. perhaps even dazzling! May it be so, Amen.
