October Workshops: Learning to Lament Gun Violence
Register here (See your newsletter to register)
Gun violence has left us scared and angry, confused and frustrated, frozen and numb. As people of faith, we’re called to share these feelings with God—and to call on God to act.
In the month of October, attend a workshop to do just that. Learn about the ancient, cathartic practice of lament: The act of raising our fears, questions, and even complaints to God in a faithful manner, all while standing firm on God’s promises to bring about a better world. One without gun violence.
Workshops will be led by The Rev. Deacon R. Dale Smith, a former writing professor. Zoom and in-person options are available, as well as workshops for middle and high school youth. Click here for workshop details and to register.
After your workshop, you can offer your lament for use in the upcoming Service of Community Lament, to be held on Sunday November 5 at 5:30 PM at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, on Northside. Click here to learn more about this and other upcoming events addressing gun violence in our city.
Hear the good news: We do not need to carry the cross of gun violence alone; we can share it with each other and with our God; we can trust that change will come. Amen.

Prayers for those preparing for Confirmation & Reception | |
Lord, You send out Your Spirit to touch the hearts of all people, so that they may believe in You and in Jesus whom You sent. Look kindly on all candidates for Confirmation and Reception, especially Keith Jones, Lornel Thompkins, Vivienne Brown and Adam Martinez, as they listen to Your voice. Open their hearts to Your Spirit and bring to fulfilment the good work that You have begun in them.
As we prepare these, your children for Confirmation and Reception, make each of us an instrument of Your love. Teach us to appreciate what is holy in
others, and to be patient with what we do not understand. Deepen our faith in the Gospel and help us to pass it on by our example. We pray that You will continue to guide us and sustain us. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
