Azalea Landing Marks Major Investment in Senior Housing

AHFA dedicated $2.2 million in HOME funds and $1.7 million in tax credits resulting in an equity infusion of $15.8 million for Azalea Landing, which held a grand opening ceremony on November 18. This development now provides 56 affordable housing units for Mobile’s low-income seniors.

The complex features two-bedroom apartments designed with accessibility in mind, along with amenities such as a clubhouse, picnic pavilion, computer center, and fitness room. Azalea Landing represents a collaborative effort between AHFA and developers to address the growing need for senior housing in Alabama.

Developers Describe the Power of Partnerships in Housing

Success rarely happens in isolation in the affordable housing industry. Building sustainable communities requires collaboration, cumulative expertise, and a willingness to learn from others. Partnerships are the foundation that make progress possible, according to several experienced developers who shared their advice with AHFA. You can watch their full interviews at Developer Tips for Success.

If you’re interested in starting a career in affordable housing, the first thing I would tell you is partner, partner, partner. The best possible thing is to work for another developer for a while and learn the ropes.

Paula Rhodes, InVictus Development

Be willing to work as supporting cast to development to gain the knowledge that is required before you go out on your own. That is the key in my opinion: the experience you gain through the experience of others.

Dewayne Richardson, Optimum Value LLC

If you’re entering into the industry as a nonprofit housing developer, don’t try to do it on your own. We’re very blessed in the partnerships that we have created over the years.

Tim Thrasher, CAPNA
