"AROUND THE EMERALD GREEN"

Emerald a chara/Dear Emerald,

The Grand Council trekked out to the other end of Long Island (Brooklyn) for our May meeting at The Wicked Monk. The DSNY ES pipes and drums treated us with a special performance, and thank you to the Wicked Monk for their hospitality. Our guest speaker Francis McLoughlin, Chairman of the Bayside Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, gave a brief overview of the Bayside parade and great news that the GCUES will have an Aide to the Grand Marshal in the 2023 Bayside Parade.

The GCUES is proud to be a sponsor of the 2022 Big Irish Campfire Forum (August 18, 2022, to August 19, 2022) at Iona College, New Rochelle, NY, 715 North Avenue, New Rochelle, NY. More details at the June meeting.

Our Employment resources page for civil service and public utilities job openings is now live on our website. Please share the page with family and friends. Also, if your agency or trade has any job openings, please email them.

The next affiliated delegates meeting is Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at JC Fogarty's, 60 Kraft Avenue, Bronxville, NY. 7:30 pm. The Grand Council does not meet in July and August.

Please review the minutes from the previous meeting and the upcoming meeting agenda.

NEWS
Congratulations
Congratulations to our very own Father Brendan Fitzgerald on his appointment as the New York State Ancient Order of Hibernians Chaplain.

Fr. Fitzgerald was born in Rockaway Beach, NY, the son of Irish immigrants from County Kerry. He attended Maynooth Seminary in Kildare, and in his pastoral year, he served St. Mother Theresa of Calcutta. Fr. Fitzgerald was ordained in 2000 in Limerick, and after serving for five years as a priest in Ireland, he returned to the U.S. in 2006.

He is currently the pastor of St. Barnabas Church (Bronx, NY), a robust Irish-American parish on Woodlawn-McLean Avenue, and serves as the Dean of the North East Bronx. A fan of Gaelic games, he serves as Chaplain of the NY GAA, FDNY Emerald Society, Grand Council of United Emerald Societies, and AOH Bronx Division 5.

For several years, Fr. Fitzgerald has been the principal celebrant for the annual Bronx AOH Irish language Mass where he celebrates the Mass in Gaelic. The Mass is a national AOH event viewed online by thousands of people across the United States and Ireland.

Congratulations
Congratulations to PESW Past President Peter Van Slyck, 2022 Westchester County Police Emerald Society Irish Man of the Year.
