2020 Washington Goes Purple
Call for Artists

The Washington County Arts Council, Inc. (WCAC) and Washington Goes Purple invite local artists working in any medium to submit their art for a September 2020 exhibit, “Purple - the Color of Recovery.” The juried community art exhibit will be on display virtually and in the gallery from August 27, 2020 through September 29, 2020. “Purple - the Color of Recovery,” while recognizing the impact of the opioid epidemic, celebrates recovery and the hope that we will heal as a community.”

The Best Local Art of 2020
The Washington County Arts Council, Inc. invites local artists working in any medium to submit their best new works for WCAC’s “Annual Community Art Show: The Best Local Art of 2020.” The juried community art exhibit will be on display virtually and in the gallery from December 3, 2020 through January 5, 2021.

Submission Deadline: October 24, 2020

Mark Youngblood
Mark Youngblood has been a photography teacher at Barbara Ingram School for the Arts as an Artist in Residence since the opening of the school in 2009. Mr. Youngblood is the owner of Youngblood Studios and has been a professional photographer for over 30 years. Mr. Youngblood attended Hagerstown Community College and then Shepherd University. Mr. Youngblood holds memberships in several professional photography organizations, including being named commercial and portrait photographer of the year in the state of Maryland.

Teresa Roberts
Dr. Teresa Roberts earned a BA in Fine Arts from Macalester College, an Interdisciplinary MEd in the visual arts and education from Frostburg State University, and a PhD in Art Education from The Ohio State University. Dr. Roberts taught visual arts in Maryland public secondary schools for 25 years including 9 years at Barbara Ingram School for the Arts in Hagerstown. Dr. Roberts has taught studio art, art appreciation, and art education courses at Frostburg State University, Allegany College, The Ohio State University and the Wexner Center for the Arts. Dr. Roberts has exhibited in a variety of locations throughout the country and has won scholarships and awards for her work.
Discovery Station is pleased to announce its reopening on Tuesday, July 14, 2020! The museum will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Due to COVID capacity limitations, ALL visitors MUST pre-purchase tickets. A limited number of tickets will be available and must be purchased online – no walk-ups. Members will not pay admission but WILL still need to reserve tickets in advance before visiting.
Masks will be required for everyone 5 and over and social distancing must be practiced. Upon entry, guests will be asked to sign the Discovery Station Covid Waiver and health screening. You may review it before purchasing tickets at the link below.
Regrettably, due to the current COVID 19 situation and Maryland's current guidelines, the Boonsboro Historical Society is cancelling the 49th Annual Boonesborough Days set for September 12th and 13th of this year.
The safety and well-being of all the participants is in the forefront of this decision.
Thank you so much for supporting our event for all these years and we will be looking to the future when we can celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Boonesborough Days in 2021!!!
The City of Hagerstown Parks & Recreation Division is pleased to announce the opening of the Jonathan Hager House Museum and the City Park Train Hub for the 2020 season. The two sites in Hagerstown City Park will be open to visitors every Friday & Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. starting this Friday, July 17, 2020. During the week, private tours are available to be scheduled by appointment by contacting the City of Hagerstown Parks & Recreation office: 301-739-8577 x 170, parksandrec@hagerstownmd.org; please schedule at least 48 hours in advance. There is no charge for classroom visits or educational school trips to the Hager House or City Park Train Hub, though donations are appreciated. Programs at the Jonathan Hager House Museum and Train Hub will resume as well, with some requiring advance registration. Ballet & All That Jazz Recital

The Maryland Theatre presents Dwight Yoakam

Dwight Yoakam has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide, and he is a 21-time nominated, multiple GRAMMY Award winner. He has 12 gold albums and 9 platinum or multi-platinum albums, with five of those albums topping Billboard’s Country Albums chart and another 14 landing in the Top 10. Nearly 40 of Yoakam’s singles have charted on Billboard, with 14 peaking in the Top 10.

In addition to his musical career, Yoakam is a formidable film and television actor who has appeared in over 40 feature films, including Sling Blade and Panic Room. In 2016, he recurred in David E. Kelley’s Amazon series Goliath. Recently, he appeared in director Steven Soderbergh’s film Logan Lucky with Channing Tatum and Daniel Craig. Yoakam is capable of seamlessly melting into his roles and impressively standing toe-to-toe with some of the world’s top thespians over the course of his storied and successful acting career, including Jodie Foster, Tommy Lee Jones, Jared Leto, Forest Whitaker, and Matthew McConaughey.

MSAC Program Directors Emily Sollenberger and Laura Weiss are hosting a series of online gatherings for independent artists to connect with creative, discipline-specific community members in a small group setting. These hour-long lunchtime sessions are an “off the record” time to share with peers where you are at in your current work, what you are excited about, and what challenges you may be facing.
