August 2024

HELLO!

Words from your Houston SCBWI Assistant Regional Advisor!

Greetings, Houston SCBWI!

Happy August, everyone! I hope everyone made it through Hurricane Beryl relatively unscathed. Certainly we all have a new appreciation for AC. I lost an oak tree that was in the front yard, but thankfully it landed in the street. When I see the six-foot-tall pile of logs and branches still waiting to be picked up, I remind myself that I'm thankful not to have had more damage and that the sound of the falling tree summoned a pack of guys with chainsaws. If you're like me, you've been a bit scattered since the Beryl upheaval, but I'm getting back into the normal routine and regaining some focus.

So, here's hoping for a normal month! Check out what we have coming up, like our monthly meeting with a picture book presentation by author Varsha Bajaj. As usual, there will be an open critique meeting before that, so bring some pages or illustrations for some feedback from the group. On the 17th, you can join us online to virtually work alongside other creatives in our Write, Love, Draw session. (And how adorable is IC Jennie's illustration for that event?!)

Read on to catch up on more news, like our picture book study, blog interview, December retreat, and more.

August Meeting

This in-person meeting features our very own New York Times bestselling author Varsha Bajaj! For the August meeting she will discuss finding the heart of your picture book. Varsha says, "Every picture book has a breathing heart. Finding the core is a process. I’ll share the journey for some of my published and upcoming picture books."

Come find your 'heart' in person at the Tracy Gee Community Center.

Hope to see you August 5th at 7 pm. In the meantime, get to know Varsha better from her interview on our blog!

Write, Draw, Love Monthly Write-in/Draw-in

(ONLINE only for Aug.)

Let's get together and work on our WIPs! Come join us online this month as we socialize a little, and write/illustrate together. It doesn't matter if you create with words, paint, or both.

This is usually an in-person setting for us to keep ourselves accountable for our creative time and energize each other, BUT Jennie Smith, your talented artist, is unable to host for August so it will not be at Tracy Gee. You can still keep yourself accountable for two hours of creating by hopping on Zoom with Co-Regional Advisor, Annie Harmon. If you join a little late, don't be shy about entering.

Let us know you plan to stop in (so you can get the link in your 'events')

Online Only Picture Book Study!

We're exploring what works in popular picture books.

Join us to learn the subtle art of including a lesson in a picture book as we study Grumpy Monkey by Suzanne and Max Lang.

Book study led by our New Member Coordinator, Michelle B.

Let us know you're coming!

September's Chapter Meeting

Join us for an in-person and online event for all creators!

What kills creativity? Routine, rules, and comparing ourselves to those who have already reached the goals we’ve set for ourselves. This month, we're taking a break from teaching the rules of writing and simply allowing ourselves to be silly. Your regional team will be offering games to stretch your creative muscles. For those joining online, please have some blank sheets of paper and small random items handy.

FOLK WISDOM & OTHER THOUGHTS

By Jim Smolski

The smallest ray of sunshine can start a leaf to turn and look with hope. I want to be the sunshine that creates that moment for at least one leaf every day.

-Jim

Hurricane

They said it wouldn’t hit us.

So, we decided not to worry.

We turned off any news of it.

Its course changed in a hurry.

We decide it’s not our problem.

Then, preparing wasn’t done.

As it turned with every minute.

Heeding warnings had not begun.

In a world we claim to be safe.

Advice thrown away for our pride.

Climate issues, still not our concern.

Though many scientists have tried.

The missteps leave us unprotected.

The hurricane hits us straight on.

Scrambling for the usual comforts.

With our power and time now gone.

One day without lights and A/C.

Then the waiting begins.

Days come and then go with our hope.

Unprepared. Nobody wins.

This storm prompts us to get ready.

Do nothing. No one dared.

Certain other storms are coming.

This time, let’s get prepared.
