Impact Report: Educational Signage in the Mark Twain National Forest

Project: Educational Signage in the Mark Twain National Forest

Project #43/50

State: Missouri

In collaboration with the Back Country Horsemen of Missouri (BCHMO), Tread Lightly! designed and produced new signage for the Mark Twain National Forest in Missouri. Together eight volunteers installed signage to help educate motorized and equestrian recreationists on best practices for interfacing on shared use trails.

BCHMO had a photoshoot with motorized users and an equestrian rider on horseback to illustrate the proper etiquette of ATV/dirt bike riders when encountering a rider. 25 signs, posts and hardware were provided to BCHMO to install across Mark Twain National Forest and the surrounding properties to help shared use areas remain sustainable through positive communication between different recreationists with safety in mind.

Thank you to the following partners for their support:

Back County Horsemen of Illinois (BCHIL)

On June17, 2024, Back Country Horsemen of IL had a pack day in Lusk Creek Wilderness in Shawnee National Forest (SNF). We are working to keep the trail up out of the mud by building structures/turnpikes and adding waters bars to divert the water away from the trail. On our pack day, we moved approximately 15,600 pounds of rock in about 4 ½ hours. We were able to move that amount of rock in a short timeframe due to it being a short round trip from the staging area to structures on the trail and back to staging area. The short round trip also puts more demands on the crew at the rock pile to keep up with shoveling rock into buckets and having buckets ready.

Horse Corrals Installed at Randolph Area of Tuttle Creek State Park

After months of raising funds and planning, the eight new double horse pens on the 200 loop at the Randolph Area of Tuttle Creek State Park became a reality on the rainy Saturday morning of July 20. Thanks to the volunteers from the Tuttle Creek Chapter of Back Country Horsemen of Kansas and park manager Levi Gantenbein with his skid loader, the work was accomplished in a short, drenching time. With the completion of arches designating the Opie Huddleston trail heads, two major projects have come to fruition.

VOLUNTEER HOURS UPDATE

Hello Members,

BCHA Volunteer Hours Committee has updated the volunteer hours reporting form. The reason for this change is because we feel we are missing out on opportunities through the USFS and other organizations by not providing trail information that you all have volunteered to maintain. By collecting trail names we open the doors for potential grants and other funds paid to BCH states for their time.

The updated form is available by clicking the link below. And please reach out to the volunteer hours committee if you have any questions. volunteer@bcha.org
