The Buckhorn Ranger Station

By L Jay McDonald

The Buckhorn Ranger Station, high in the Roosevelt National Forest west of Ft. Collins, Colorado, was constructed in the 1930's by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and is an historic place. It was originally established in 1906 as a small log cabin as a remote ranger station and was improved and enlarged by the CCC. Forest Rangers used horses and mules to patrol and manage the area in and around the station until forest service roads were built. The station suffered from a period of neglect in the latter part of the 20th century. The U.S. Forest Service recognized the historical significance of the station for its role in multiple use land management over the past 100 years and committed to restoring the station and its buildings. As part of that restoration, Northern Colorado BCH chapter (NCBCH) was asked by the Roosevelt Forest Service to rebuild the perimeter fence. During the initial meeting at the site, we saw the remains of a make shift corral in the southeast corner of the enclosure and asked if we could rebuild it historically correct. The Forest Service was very happy with our offer. Over the course of the spring and summer, NCBCH crews made numerous work party trips to the station finally finishing on August 2nd.

MOBILE INCIDENT REPORTING FORMS

You might have seen the request to submit “incident report forms” for e-bike interactions and horse camps occupied by non stock users, to help provide record of the issue. Of course it is always great to talk to people directly if you can do so safely, however submitting a report can demonstrate a pattern of issues to help change rules or encourage enforcement.

Did you know that you can add these forms to the home screen of your smartphone? Instructions on the website here https://www.bcha.org/incidentreportingform/

VOLUNTEER HOURS UPDATE

Hello Members,

BCHA Volunteer Hours Committee has updated the volunteer hours reporting form. The reason for this change is because we feel we are missing out on opportunities through the USFS and other organizations by not providing trail information that you all have volunteered to maintain. By collecting trail names we open the doors for potential grants and other funds paid to BCH states for their time.

The updated form is available by clicking the link below. And please reach out to the volunteer hours committee if you have any questions. volunteer@bcha.org
