It's Been an Exciting Month!

|
The month of June was filled with lots of excitement: the 7th cohort of Art of Leadership students graduated; the Community Service and Public Art team installed the organization's largest mosaic mural to date, and the programming team showcased and celebrated its talented artists in "Show What You Know." The HeARTworks team has been preparing to welcome in-person (it's been two years) a new group of workforce students who will learn job skills while creating lots of wonderful art for Heartwares. Be sure to mark your calendars for Market at the Mill on August 12th featuring DJ Kopec, food, drinks, and of course, the work of our talented students.

For the programming team, June was a celebration of new beginnings and heartfelt endings. In partnership with the Baltimore City Public School Office of Early Learning, Art with a Heart hosted a "Find Your Way to Pre-K" event for rising pre-K students and their families. The budding artists received a "Passport to the Arts" and traveled to different stations in the Heartwares space learning about various art mediums. Each "traveler" got a stamp in their passport for each station they traveled to: Printmaking, Sculpture, Ceramics, and Painting!
Art with a Heart was thrilled to collaborate with Child First Authority to create its largest student showcase to date! The annual Show What You Know Showcase boasted the artwork of students from 13 partnering schools. Students from each school were able to see their artwork creatively displayed at Coppin State University.
And a bittersweet moment - Art with a Heart teacher, Lara Clayborne, shared a tearful goodbye with one of her graduating 8th-grade students from Sandtown Winchester Academy. The young man who has been a student of Ms. Clayborne since 4th grade said, "What do I do now Ms. Lara, I don't want to leave you!"

This stunning 245 square foot mosaic mural was created for the new Midtown Campus Tower of the University of Maryland Medical Center. Over 300 individuals of all ages (most without any previous mosaic or art experience) came together and dedicated countless hours to create this intricate mosaic that will serve to welcome staff, patients, and visitors.

At the final leadership session of the year, Cohort 7 competed in a game of trivia that reviewed topics explored throughout the year, and learned fun facts about teammates. Leaders also made great progress on their Capstone Public Art project (designed by student Olivia!), a 4'x8' mosaic to be installed at NAMI Baltimore. Stay tuned for photos of the final installation.
The 21 exceptional members of Cohort 7 also graduated this month, and brought the number of leaders in the Art of Leadership Alumni Network to 130! With family and friends in attendance, students spoke about the lasting impact of the program: listening to different perspectives, creating a safe community, and becoming stronger advocates for equity and justice. Congratulations to the unforgettable and unstoppable graduates!

Claremont School students celebrated their last HeARTworks class by sharing anonymous compliments to one another on a "attributes t-shirt" worksheet. Everyone was all smiles as they garnered appreciation from their peers.
As July approaches, the HeARTworks team is busy preparing for their largest HeARTworks summer sessions yet! Beginning on July 5th, HeARTworks will be welcoming over 120 participants from YouthWorks, Bridges, Thread, ¡Adelante Latina!, The Choice Program, Enoch Pratt Free Library, Bon Secours Community Works, Baltimore City Recreation and Parks, St. Francis Neighborhood Center, and Arrow Child & Family Ministries. Save the date to share in the "end of program" celebration, Market at the Mill, on August 12th at 4:30pm at Art with a Heart. In the meantime, grab some Art with a Heart summer swag.
