| | Celebrating Our Differences is What Makes Montbello Unique | | |
Montbello is a true melting pot that people of many different nationalities, ages, genders and backgrounds call home. While more than 60% of Montbello’s 41,000 residents identify as Hispanic or Latino, the neighborhood is also home to a significant number of Black or African Americans, whites, Native Americans, Asians and individuals of more than one ethnicity. Twenty two percent of residents are under the age of 19 while nearly 28 percent are over age 65. What makes Montbello unique is the harmony and collaboration that exists among neighbors from different backgrounds and generations.
The 10th annual Montbello Alive! showcased the neighborhood’s special character. Crowds of all ages gathered at Parkfield Lake Park on Saturday, September 20th. Greetings from neighbors and introductions to new friends could be heard in many different languages. The entertainment included representation from a variety of cultures including Mexican Folklorica, Native American dancers, jazz and R&B music, spoken word poetry and students from the Montbello High School drum line. The scent of delicious and diverse food including machetes, elote, Po’boys and BBQ provided by local food trucks filled the air. Some groups played Loteria while others showed off their soccer skills and children enjoyed the Extreme Game Truck.
The 10th annual Montbello Alive! was a huge success with more than 1,300 community members coming together to celebrate, learn and revel in our community’s unique differences.
| | Tip of the Month: What to Know About COVID-19 | | |
In recent weeks, the number of COVID-19 cases across the state has risen. Utilities in 11 of the 20 counties that measure pathogens have reported an increase in the levels of COVID-19 virus particles in wastewater, including parts of the Denver metro area. During a recent call, members of the Colorado Council of Black Nurses compared notes and reported that the most common symptoms among those diagnosed with COVID-19 are a stabbing sore throat, chest congestion, watery eyes and an upset stomach.
As we head into the cooler months, cases of COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses are likely to increase. Here’s some steps that you can take to protect yourself and your loved ones:
- Stay up to date on vaccinations: In Colorado, you do not need a prescription to receive vaccinations. Most health insurance plans cover the cost of the vaccine as long as it is administered by a covered pharmacy or medical provider. The CDC recommends that adults between the ages of 19 and 64 receive one dose of the 2024-2025 Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine or two doses of the 2024–25 Novavax vaccine. A second dose of the Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is recommended for adults 65 and older. Parents of children 18 and younger should seek the guidance of their physician. In addition, everyone over the age of 6 months should receive an annual influenza vaccination unless allergic to the ingredients.
- Boost your immune system by taking supplements such as vitamin C and rosehips. Note: you should always seek the guidance of your physician before taking supplements.
- Wash your hands frequently and avoid touching your face.
-
Stock up on COVID-19 tests. While your symptoms may seem more like a cold or allergies, it’s important to test for COVID-19 before leaving the house so that you don’t infect others – particularly those with weakened immune symptoms. Most pharmacies carry at-home testing kits. If you have an old COVID-19 testing kit, check the FDA’s website before throwing it out as many of the expiration dates have been extended.
