"Baba's Beloved Mehera: Celebrating
the Purest Soul in the Universe"
This coming Sunday Lois Jones will host a program honoring dearest Mehera and her immeasurable love for Baba. We hope you will come join us at the table as we share tea and tell stories, much like Beloved Baba's Mehera did with so many at His Meherazad dining table.
For those unfamiliar with Mehera's life story we provide a little background: On 7 January, 1907*, Mehera Jehangir Irani was born to middle-class Zoroastrian parents (Jehangir and Daulat Irani) in the north Indian town of Sukkur. Little did her parents know, but they had just brought a very special soul into the world who would one day take her place as the Sita, the Radha, or the Mary of her Age.
Meher Baba called Mehera His Beloved, and had referred to her as His "very breath without which I cannot live."
In the foreward to the 1989 biography bearing her name, Baba's sister Mani writes of Mehera's unique spiritual status:
"This role, of being the chosen counterpart to the
God-Man, amounts to the highest, purest, most
spiritual relationship, consisting of a divine love
which the world cannot imagine."
(
Mehera, p. VII, from the foreward by Mani Irani)
Mehera's early life was marked by the relative material comforts that her father's government post afforded her family.
On the subject of youthful spirituality Mehera told her biographer David Fenster that "As a child, before meeting Baba, I don't remember thinking of God."
She added that "I was playful and liked climbing trees and running with my dog, Peter...going to the riverside. I loved nature and much preferred the outdoors."
Though being drawn to these natural joys of childhood Mehera's destiny would be foreshawdowed in January of 1922, when at the age of 15 she would catch her first glimpse of "Meherwanji." Mehera recounted that while visiting Upasni Maharaj's ashram :
"... I saw Baba for the first time quickly from the
side, as he strode quickly past us. He was fair, but I
didn't see his eyes or their expression, as he
was looking straight ahead. His face and body were
very thin, because he had been fasting."
Mehera would later tell David Fenster that she did not look into Baba's eyes during that first encounter as she was "very shy." She explained that she loved Baba in the way one loves a Perfect Master. Only much later after having gone to live in Meherabad would Mehera's love flower into the all encompassing self-sacrificing love that we would come to know of.
And it would be much later, after having lived most of her adult life under the close supervision and loving protection of Meher Baba, and having been totally dedicated to him in every thought and deed that Mehera would later serve as the surviving link to the Avatar. In the years after Meher Baba dropped His physical form, pilgrims from all over the world would flock to India.
And so Mehera would go from having lived a life of the most strict seclusion and isolation to one of very intense social activity and interaction. It was during this later period that most American Baba Lovers who were fortunate enough to meet Mehera would get to hear her stories and experience her unique love first hand.
-------------------------
"The absolutely clear mirror of Mehera's immaculate heart, which Baba took great pains to keep unclouded by the dust of the world, reflects Baba's image, the image of the Divine Beloved, as none other can."
(Mehera, p. VIII, foreward by Mani Irani)
Jai Baba!
* Mehera's birthday was listed on her passport as being 1/1/07, and on her school certificate as 1/4/07, but it says January 7th on her tomb.
