Extremely Limited 2018 & 2019 Vintages

Bernard Moreau's Phenomenal Chassagne-Montrachet

Rouge & Blanc, Only 12-24 Bottles of Each

Dear Artisans,

It's important to keep in mind that there will be a massive shortage of new Burgundy stock worldwide for a while. This is because the frost in 2021 destroyed up to 90% of vineyards, and its impact is now fully evident in the market.

As such, we're elated to offer you, at the lowest prices in the country, the few cases we just received of Bernard Moreau's truly stunning 2018 and 2019 vintages.

It’s impossible to discuss Chassagne-Montrachet without mentioning the name Bernard Moreau. Year to year, this celebrated producer vinifies and bottles some of the purest, most thought-provoking wines of the appellation. Employing a style of wine making that might best be described as hands-off, Alex Moreau produces Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays that are sensual, opulent and utterly delicious.

The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Old Vines red is already drinking beautifully with 5 years of age, and will reward 20-30 more years of cellaring if you wish. Priced under $60, this is the most case-worthy Red Burgundy in recent memory. We just wish we had more than 24 bottles to offer.

Likewise, the 2018 and 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet whites easily stand alongside Premier Crus that cost twice as much. The 12 bottles we have of each will be gone before tonight's game is over, so move quickly!

All my best,

—James Tran

2018 Bernard Moreau Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes Rouge

93 Points - James Suckling:

"Plums with dried strawberries, burnt lemon and some flowers. Very pure. Full-bodied with a compact palate and velvety tannins that are polished and very pretty at the end. Balanced and energetic. So delicious now, but even better in a couple of years."

91 Points - Robert Parker's WA:

"Bursting with aromas of rose petals, berries, spices and blood orange, the 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes is medium to full-bodied, charming and succulent, with a perfumed core of fruit, powdery tannins and a nicely defined finish. Vinified with 30% whole cluster and finishing up at 13.1% alcohol, this delicious Chassagne is one of the sleepers of the vintage. Drink 2020-2040."

91 Points - John Gilman, View from the Cellar:

As I have mentioned several times in recent years, the red wines of Chassagne-Montrachet are one of the few in Burgundy that seem to be benefiting (at least so far) from global warming, and this is quickly becoming one of the best values for red wines to be found in the region. Alex Moreau has been one of the leaders in crafting more elegant examples of Chassagne rouge in recent years and I am going to be writing a feature on the under-respected red wines of this commune in a coming issue. Alex’s 2018 old vine Chassagne rouge is outstanding, having included thirty percent whole clusters this year, seeing only ten percent new oak and tipping the scales at a very civilized 13.1 percent octane. The bouquet offers up a youthful bouquet of red and black cherries, bitter chocolate, gamebird, dark soil tones, a hint of orange peel and a gentle framing of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and nascently complex, with a good core of fruit, fine-grained tannins and a long, vibrant and very promising finish. This will be an excellent wine! 2025-2055+.

  • From vineyards planted in 1960-1965
  • Aged in 10%-30% New French oak for 15 months
  • 13.1% Alcohol

91-94 Points - Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy:

This is a few months behind where it would normally be and will not be bottled before late January. Pale lemon colour with a really classy chiselled bouquet and a superb wealth of predominantly white fruit right across the palate to a clean cut finish. This is brilliant wine and seems fully concentrated.

92 Points - James Suckling:

Dried pear and apple with some lime aromas and flavors. Medium body and medium-round texture with a lightly tangy finish. Minerally. Drink now.

91 Points, Outstanding - Burghound

Discreet wood influence sets off the ripe aromas of various white-fleshed fruit along with hints of matchstick and lemon rind. The rich and relatively full-bodied flavors possess both good detail and punch, all wrapped in a less refined but notably more complex finale. This is a quality Chassagne villages.

2019 Bernard Moreau Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc

91-93 Points - Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy:

A large cuvée covering the whole appellation. It is a good feeling to be able to recommend a wine, which should be relatively easily findable in the market place. Pale lemon colour, a vibrant nose with some fresh apples alongside the riper fruit notes. Excellent balance here, nuanced, subtle, authoritative and long.

91 Points - Vinous:

The palate is well balanced and demonstrates good concentration with just a touch of viscosity. Ginger and orange rind notes furnish the finish that exhibits fine composure with moderate length. Enjoy over 8-10 years. (Drink between 2021-2032)

90 Points - Burghound:

Hints of matchstick character and petrol add breadth to the white peach and citrus confit scented nose. The dense, vibrant and appealingly textured medium-bodied flavors are notably less refined but more powerful while exhibiting fine length on the compact, long and serious finale. This is a very good Chassagne villages and worth considering.
