*Eruv Tavshilin is a solution to satisfy the halachah that prohibits any work or activity on a Yom Tov for the day that will follow it. This halachah strives to protect the integrity of every holy day. This halachah inevitably imposes a problem when Shabbat immediately follows a Yom Tov, as it will with Rosh HaShanah next week (and Succot and Simchat Torah in two and three weeks respectively). The instrument of "eruv tavshilin" operates as follows - 1) On Wednesday before Yom Tov candle lighting, set aside two prepared food item and designate them as being for Shabbat. 2) Hold them, or at least focus on them and recite the blessing "Baruch Atah Ad-onoi, Eloheynu melech h'olam, asher ,kidshanu b'mitzvotav, v'tzeevanu al mitzvat eruv". This recitation affirms, via the two prepared items, that Shabbat preparations have already begun on Wednesday; and therefore, Friday's Yom Tov spirit would not be compromised by the needs to finish the Shabbat prep before Friday evening's proper candle lighting time.
