Pilgrims Hospice bringing comfort and dignity    Cam

Cam Tait, reporter for the Edmonton Sun, has been a supporter of Pilgrims Hospice for many years. After visiting the hospice again just before Christmas, Cam wrote:

"...one visit to the hospice and it's clearly obvious people who use the hospice are not dying. They are living with comfort and dignity.... Pilgrims Hospice gives the holiday season a new meaning that not only Candy Cane Lane, but the entire city can be proud of."

Excerpts from "Hospice Care in the province" presented to Legislative by

Steve Young, MLA  MLA

"In my constituency Pilgrims Hospice provides end-of-life support and outreach. I would like to commend the board of directors, staff, volunteers, and families who collectively provide these services as Albertans' life journeys come to an end."

"Mr. Speaker, Pilgrims Hospice places an emphasis on the person's quality of life, developing respectful relationships with those who seek its services. Most of all, Pilgrims Hospice provides critically ill individuals the opportunity to live their last days in a calm, peaceful, and fulfilling way."

With thanks to Steve Young, MLA, for his active support of Pilgrims Hospice, Edmonton.

Increasingly AcknowledgedNewYear

2014 was a great year for Pilgrims Hospice Society. We had our most successful Special Events to date, made new Partnerships that will help sustain our Programming, and made some new "friends" at our Candy Cane Lane Open House.

A big Thank You to Danny Hooper for the success of our Walk in My Shoes event - and the Soul Sisters Nelly's Project, whose proceeds to Pilgrims was over $100,000.00!

Pilgrims has been working hard to no longer be the 'best kept secret in Edmonton'. You may have seen our stunning digital Pattison Outdoor boards around the city, or logged into our new website, or read an article in the Sun and Journal about us. It is obvious we are becoming increasingly recognized and acknowledged for the important work we do in our Community.

We are moving into 2015 with big smiles and much excitement. We will continue to offer our quality and compassionate Hospice programs, as well as look for opportunities of growth and increased support for those who are living with life threatening illness, for their families and for those left behind in grief.

We are so grateful to all of you who continue to support us with your generous donations, to those of you who give us your time and your talents, and to our Board of Directors who voluntarily give direction and lead us to success.

We at Pilgrims Hospice offer our sincere condolences to the families, friends and local community deeply affected by the recent killings in the Edmonton area.

Coping with death is challenging for children and teenagers, but is especially difficult following a suicide or murder. In an interview with the Edmonton Journal, our bereavement and grief counsellor, Cheryl Salter-Roberts, gave the following tips to parents and caregivers of children and teens:

- Use language that fits the age but is clear and correct. Saying someone has died is much more concrete for children, even as young as three, instead of saying "they've gone away" or "passed." Children then logically wish for them to return.

- Keep conversations brief because children need to absorb the information. Offer a bit and then see how they take it. Most often they'll resume playing, and then come back for more information.

The Gift of Music Music

Did you make it to our Festive Concert? If so, you'll have experienced the wonderful talent of pianist Anna Maria Manalo, and have witnessed her gentle nature and endearing humility.

Every Wednesday before lunch, Pilgrims Hospice is filled with music, as Anna plays for our Adult Respite Day Program. Taking diverse requests from Brahms and Mozart to sing-along medleys, Anna caters to the various tastes and moods of our clients.

In honour of Anna's contribution to the warm atmosphere at Pilgrims and her special care of our clients, we are happy to name her Volunteer of the Month! Thank you for all you bring, Anna.

Along with Anna, we'd also like to give special thanks to  Nova Musica and the Edmonton Swiss Men's Choir, for their special contributions to our Festive Concert. Read more about our successful event here
