FEATURED FILMMAKER

Placing the spotlight on local talent

Quinn Thomashow

"When I'm willing to let the water swallow me is when it often lets me float."

"This video is a compilation of footage shot in Vermont during the pandemic, edited by Everest Crawford with a song I wrote as a love note to Vermont and my community. Thank you for inspiring me, grounding me and propelling me forward. It takes a village!"

-Quinn Thomashow

I was lucky enough to have the chance to sit down and chat with Vermont native experimental filmmaker and media educator, Quinn Thomashow, about her filmmaking origins, how the pandemic redefined her understanding of the local community, and about her hopes and dreams for the future as she sits on the precipice of a new and exciting journey: AFI (American Film Institute).

Her intrinsic desire to build worlds with a camera spurs from growing up on a farm with a vivid imagination, constantly creating her own tiny worlds for herself and her animal friends to occupy. A mind that lends itself to the visual, Quinn is able to best communicate with the world through showing, rather than telling, and considers expression and reclamation of the inner child a central and nearly all encompassing tenet of her filmmaking. Graduating from Hampshire College with a BA in Experimental and Documentary Film Studies in the throes of 2020, Quinn suddenly found herself back home. She credits the pandemic for forcing her back home and allowing her to immerse herself in a newly discovered and incredibly strong Vermont filmmaking community. She feels greatly supported by this community, and is grateful to all who have given her opportunities to grow, experiment, and create incredible things such as Light River Junction. She says this nourishment of her creative self by community is what makes it easier to leave. The Vermont film community has permanently impacted her, and vice versa, reassuring her through the understanding that she'll always be here, even when she's not.

Quinn sets off to AFI in August to pursue a degree in Cinematography. Often finding herself as the only non-male in a technical role on a film set in the past, Quinn hopes to not only hone in on her craft, but to also join a growing movement of women in film, carving out diverse and inclusive spaces in the industry. While she is incredibly sad to leave, she knows she has to. In order to give back to her community in all the ways she desires, she needs to first give herself more– a new journey, a new environment, new skills, new stories and new experiences to share.

She must fill herself up so she can one day return and pour it back into the community she calls home.

A love note to her community, "I'm leaving Tomorrow," is a beautiful short film accompanied by an original song by Quinn which you can watch above. To listen to the full version of the insightful and profound conversation between Quinn Thomashow and Jordyn Fitch, click the button below.
