In these challenging times, we hope you are utilizing all the tools we have provided to ensure that you are prepared to manage the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on your business. We have provided timely and relevant information in our weekly e-blasts, provided important links on our website, and hosted a weekly membership conference call with our COVID-19 Experts.

We are working hard at CLIA to be sure that your membership investment and partnership gives you the tools and resources to navigate through these current challenges. We want to do a special shoutout to three of our partners that have provided invaluable resources to CLIA.

These partnerships are just one of the reasons we are #CLIAStrong.

CLIA's advocacy efforts on behalf of the industry include weekly meetings with Visit California, CAL-Chamber, Office of the Governor and Go-Biz, CA Office of Emergency Services, and more. Some of these efforts resulted in joining industry leaders to advocate for much needed relief from the State Government. Examples of our work include the Travel Industry Ask - Governor Newsom and the Request for Delayed Property Taxes .

We have developed an innovative three-pronged program to provide support and answers on the part of our lodging members about Covid-19 questions:

  • Ask the Expert - a committee of experts in a variety of fields will take your questions. You can direct your questions to info@clia.org.
  • Personal Outreach - our Task Force has called a large number of our members offering support and answering questions.
  • Dial-In Coronavirus Conference Call - providing the latest information and answering questions.

We have some difficult days ahead of us but we will get through this together. As part of our CLIA Family, we are here to assure you that better days are coming.

Airbnb Offers Housing to Medical Workers & First Responders

In response to COVID-19, Airbnb recently announced a global initiative to help house 100,000 medical workers and first responders who are on the front lines to ensure people stay safe and healthy.

Central to this initiative is the ability for first responders and medical workers to book free and discounted stays directly through Airbnb. While we will continue to work with partner organizations like government agencies, nonprofits, and healthcare providers to book stays, we recognize that time is essential during this crisis, and many responders immediately need comfortable and convenient places to stay. 

To help bring attention to this initiative and provide needed housing to medical workers, we are requesting that our local partners share this program with their stakeholders.

An Initial Checklist for Temporary Hotel Closures

During the COVID-19 crisis, many hotels will unfortunately have to stop their operations and close temporarily. This can be out of necessity if your forecasts suggest the losses experienced at these low occupancy levels are not sustainable. While closing down several floors could have saved enough variable costs in the past, the introduction of systems such as LED lights have made these savings minimal and insufficient in the current crisis. In many European countries, such as the Czech Republic and Spain, all hotels have been ordered to close by their governments. While companies like Marriott and IHG have already reopened over half of the hotels they previously closed in Greater China, we expect a larger amount of hotel closures in the US over the next few weeks.

We’ve put together a brief checklist for every hotelier faced with the difficult decision of a hotel closure.
