CONFERENCE UPDATE 8 Feb 2017

Abstract and programme development processes

With the deadline for submission of presentation Abstracts now less than 3 weeks away (28 February 2017), it's a good time to let you know more about the process of developing a conference programme from those Abstracts.

Immediately after the deadline, each Abstract will be reviewed and assessed by at least one specialist in the relevant field, together with the Programme Chair.  Authors opting for a poster presentation will very likely be allocated space in the dedicated poster session(s) that will be extremely well attended, not least because they will complemented by free drinks and nibbles! Authors seeking to give a talk will be competing for a limited number of 15-minute slots. Although every attempt will be made to give authors the presentation of their choice, this cannot be guaranteed. Those that cannot be accommodated in the spoken programme will very likely be offered space in a poster session. Poster presentations are no less valuable than a talk, and they usually offer much greater opportunity for interaction between presenters and audience.

Before being published on the website, the detailed conference programme will be scrutinised and agreed by the Programme Committee. The aim is to develop a conference programme that reflects the interests of presenters and non-presenters, focussing especially on the themes of 'scaling up to meet the challenge', biosecurity/quarantine and post eradication impacts on native biota. Authors will be informed of their allocated presenting 'slot' by no later than the end of April, and in most cases considerably earlier than this.

Presentations by early career professionals and students are warmly welcomed at II17, and there will be a prize for the best poster and best talk presented by a student. Remember to tick the 'award' box at Abstract submission if the presenting author is a student.
Two reminders.
  • Firstly, you must register for the conference before submitting an Abstract.   (https://www.registerforevent.co.uk/islandinvasives2017
  • Secondly, the acceptance of a spoken presentation comes with the obligation/opportunity to submit a written version of the paper for publication in the conference Proceedings. The Proceedings of the first two conferences in this series are now legendary and oft-cited. The firm intention is that this third volume will be of equal quality and long-term relevance.

Best wishes to all,

Tony Martin (Programme Chair) and Alison Neil (Local organisation Chair)
