Garden Street Safety Improvement Project

2025 Updates: *Corrected Project Link*

Flex-Post Installation This Week

Eversource has completed most of its utility work on Garden Street and has begun interim roadway restoration work. This work is intended to hold the roadway over until full repaving and design changes take place next year. Much of the pavement markings are now complete and their contractor will begin flex post installation within the next week.

Restoration of Two-Way Traffic in 2026

As part of a City Council order to restore two-way traffic to Garden Street while maintaining separated bike lanes, the Cambridge Department of Transportation is moving forward with planning and design efforts, with the goal of implementing the two-way configuration in 2026.

Parking and Bluebikes Location Changes

To support this change and meet local loading needs, the City, working in partnership with Harvard University, plans to construct a new loading area on Garden Street, just north of Shepard Street. You can see a map below. This area is currently the location of a Bluebikes station, which will be relocated approximately 150 feet onto Shepard Street around the corner.

We will continue to provide updates as planning progresses.
