Please note that these CPI courses will be hybrid – you will be required to complete a 4 hour course online prior to the live training at the above dates to be certified. For this reason, registration will close approximately one week prior to each course to provide you with sufficient time to complete the online portion of the course.

IEFA LESSON DEMONSTRATIONS
with DOTTIE SUSAG
Jan 18 | Feb 1 | Feb 15 | Mar 1

Join us in 2022 for a series of (4) 2-hour webinars facilitated by Dottie Susag. The goal of the series is to experience lessons that authentically integrate the Essential Understandings Regarding Montana Indians. After an interactive lesson, participants will debrief and discuss ideas for adapting and integrating the lesson into your classroom. Sessions will be recorded; join live or watch the recorded session.

  • Jan 18 - Nature and Gifts Through Montana Indian Poetry (5-12)
  • Feb 1 - Living the Now in the Presence of the Past through Joy Harjo's Poetry (9-12)
  • Feb 15 - Healing Power of Indian Poetry and Film (6-12)
  • Mar 1 - Critical Literacy: Reading and Viewing Beyond Bias and Stereotypes (6-12)

OPI Renewal Units: earn 2 for each 2-hour session you join, or earn 4 per session by implementing the lesson in your classroom and completing a follow-up reflection form.

This USER GUIDE explains the process for entering student and school Modes of Instruction. The data should be maintained continually throughout the school year to ensure accurate reporting during the following collection times:

DOROTHEA (DOTTIE) SUSAG

Dottie Susag is an award-winning high school teacher who has been critical to successful implementation of the Indian Education for All initiative. 

Since her retirement from teaching, Dottie has worked as a curriculum specialist and has written and edited several secondary-level ELA Units as well as the 2013 publication Birthright: Born to Poetry - a Collection of Montana Indian Poetry, for the Montana Office of Public Instruction. In 2017, she was one of six to receive the Montana Governor's Humanities Award given every two years.

During COVID, she conducted presentations through Humanities Montana to secondary and college-level classes through Zoom or Google Classroom. She now lives in Oakdale, Minnesota, and she travels to Montana whenever the opportunity arises.

TAMARA BLANCHARD

Tamara joined the SSoM team about a month ago as the Campus Tech Support Assistant and was certified as support by Infinite Campus at the end of November.

She hails from Gonzaga University having studied law in the early 90’s, then abandoned the trade for a career as a K-12 educator. Tamara spent the last 15 years with the Frenchtown School District where she honed her Infinite Campus student information system skills. She is eager to assist districts across Montana with ALL of their Infinite Campus questions and issues.

MONTANA STATE UNIVERSITY OFFERS PAID SUMMER RESEARCH EXPERIENCE FOR ELEMENTARY TEACHERS!
June 20 - July 29, 2022

Are you a Montana elementary school teacher looking to enliven and improve how you teach STEM in your classroom? This 6-week summer program will be offered to 10 teachers per summer for 3 years starting in 2022, and it takes place in-person in Bozeman.

In this energy-themed program, teachers gain hands-on experience in state-of-the-art engineering research labs and will visit multiple energy facilities such as hydroelectric dams and oil refineries. The field trips include visits to nearby American Indian cultural sites and discussions about Indigenous perspectives in engineering, with a focus on integrating STEM with Montana's Indian Education For All curriculum. No specific STEM background is required, and all elementary teachers are encouraged to apply.

  • Participants receive a $6,000 stipend; travel funding also available
  • Housing & meals provided; all program & research costs covered
