2) - Rabbi's Message
Parshat HaShavu'a - In Parshat Shohfteem, this week's portion, Moshe continues his teaching Torah to the people, elucidating many laws and mitzvot which help us fulfill the central teaching "Justice Justice shall you pursue" - תרדוף צדק צדק- Tzedek Tzedek Teerdohf
(Deut. 16:20).
We are called upon to create a just society, to practice justice in our personal lives and to demand that our courts and
our government treat everyone justly. The law governing monarchy (Deut. 17:14-20) - which commands the Israelite monarch to study and obey the laws of the Torah (and keep it near at all times) - is a powerful foundation of the Rule of Law, so fundamental to modern democracy. Even in times of war (Chapter 20) the Torah seeks to show us a path of righteousness and decency.
Parshat Shohfteem is found in every Bible in Deuteronomy 16:18-21:9. It is in the Hertz Chumash on pp. 820-839, and in the Conservative Chumash, Etz Hayim (with modern translation and commentaries) on pp. 1088-1111. You may also read the Parshah at this link:
