2) - Rabbi's Message

Last Shabbat, was our first Shabbat morning service of the 'soft' merger, CSS and VSCJ worshipping together. The parashah was about building the Mishkan in the wilderness and the Haftarah was about the half-shekel contribution which able bodied Jews gave toward the maintenance of the Temple. I made two points. Just as the Temple was the central institution and unifying symbol of the Jewish people, so the synagogue today is the central institution of the Jewish people in our day. And just as every Israelite contributed to the construction of the Mishkan in the wilderness, we need every member of our synagogue to participate to assure the vitality and continuity of the congregation.

Rabbi Vernon Retirement Farewell Celebration

Dear Congregant,

On Sunday, June 8, 2025, our congregation will honor Rabbi Art Vernon as he retires from his role as the Spiritual Leader of Congregation Shaaray Shalom. Rabbi Vernon has provided to us spiritual and educational guidance over the past twenty years, and it was through his leadership during the pandemic that our congregation continued to have weekly Shabbat, as well as Yom Tov services.

On June 8th, we will celebrate with Rabbi Vernon at a brunch and with various congratulatory presentations. We want to give everyone an opportunity to honor Rabbi Vernon, and we will be creating for him a ‘Congratulatory VIRTUAL Scroll,’ where congregants, family, friends and colleagues can write their good wishes. We will also be creating a photo montage to be shown at the brunch, so please forward to Ed Freeberg at edleah@aol.com any pictures that you may have that would be appropriate.

If you would like to include your celebratory wishes on this Scroll, please note the following options:

1) FULL MEMBERS: Family name listing only: $18.00

2) FULL MEMBERS: Family name and message

(25 words max) $36.00

3) ASSOCIATE MEMBERS &; Non-Members: Family name listing only: $25.00

4) ASSOCIATE MEMBERS &; Non-Members: Family name and message (25 words max) $50.00

Please email your scroll greetings to Chanene at chashaaray@gmail.com, or send them in hard copy to her at the synagogue office. Payments must be received in order for your greeting to be listed. GREETINGS WILL BE LISTED IN THE SCROLL IN THE ORDER IN WHICH THEY ARE RECEIVED.

If you would like to attend the June 8th brunch, the cost is:

Please email Chanene if you plan to attend the brunch, and payment must be received in order to attend. One check can be used for both the greetings as well as the brunch. If you are paying by check, or through our website payment option, please indicate in the MEMO line if you are paying for greetings, brunch or both. The deadline for scroll entries, as well as for brunch reservations is Monday, May 12th.

We look forward to celebrating this simcha with Rabbi Vernon on June 8th.

Best regards,

7th get resources they need to rebuild.

· Protect democracy in Israel.

For MERCAZ in 2025

My name is Lesley Harris. I am Currently a member of Valley Stream Jewish Center.

I represent the Valley Stream Jewish Center and Cong. Shaaray Shalom at MERCAZ USA.

MERCAZ USA is the United States branch of MERCAZ OLAMI, the Zionist organization of the Masorti (Conservative) Movement. MERCAZ represents Conservative Judaism within the World Zionist Organization and Congress, the Jewish Agency for Israel, the American Zionist Movement, and the Jewish National Fund. MERCAZ is the force that advocates for finding of pluralistic streams of Judaism in Israel through the World Zionist Organization (WZO) Congress, which is crucial to our movement’s growth in Israel and around the globe.

I am asking you to support MERCAZ USA by registering to vote for the election period between March 10,2025 to May 4, 2025.

Israel faces major challenges after October 7th, from rebuilding the south to healing a fractured society. However, allies of extremists like Ben Gvir and ultra-Orthodox extremists who helped drive Israelis apart and the country into the abyss in 2023, now want to redirect billions at the Zionist Congress’s disposal from urgent rebuilding projects to promoting their extreme political agenda, like money for Yeshivot that discourage army service and other controversial projects. Voting MERCAZ makes sure these funds are spent supporting those in Israel who need it most. Our representatives have already helped secure hundreds of millions through KKL/JNF to help Israelis rebuild with the WZO now responsible for managing the Israeli government’s official efforts to support our hostages and their families, MERCAZ’s representatives are working to make sure they receive the best possible care and support.

Looking forward to your support. Thank you.
